LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

Laurelin m8 the server of fun :)

Subs don't normally bother me most the time, although we need 2 in this house, but some games, like ww2ol i wish had a pay as you go setup, where you buy so many hours, as I pick that up and drop after a few nights.

Must admit that MMO fees have never really bothered me, I get far more entertainment value per month for a £10 MMO fee than almost any other form of entertainment in life. For me its always struck me as amazingly good value. Mind you, when I started MMOing broadband didnt exist and you had to pay per hour for your internet connection...now that was pricey ! I remember that a month on UO could easily cost me £100 :)

(of course, £75 for life on LOTRO is even better value though)

It affects every single other game that you arent playing because your only paying fees for one.

Because you are stuck in Lotro or any other MMO paying fees, you usually wont try or play any of the other fee based games. The more fee based games there are, the more the community gets split up, and each game struggles to grab enough subs.

I cant enjoy it, having to pay fees just to get access to the game for a very limited time sucks.

If anyone wants to add me to their Guild on the Laurelin server my main is Bav. My newbie guild disbanded as they couldnt find enough people, and you need 8 minimum.

Well I've already tried all the other fee based games that I am interested in, so its not actually stopping me from playing any of the others :D

I'm doing this:

All Professions with Four Characters

If you want your account to be completely self reliant only four vocations are required. All crafting professions can be easily covered in a Kinship with two people taking each of the four vocations. Almost everyone else in the Kinship should then take gathering professions to assist the guild with all of its resource needs.

To cover all of the crafting professions, a player would require four vocations:

a Historian (for Scholar, Farmer, Weaponsmith)
a Tinker (for Prospector, Jeweller, Cook)
an Armourer (for Prospector, Metalsmith, Tailor)
a Woodsman (for Forester, Woodworker, Farmer)

Like it says, guildies should provide me stuffs, moar ores and leathers, OREEEEES AND LEATHERS !!!!!! I can hardly get enough :(

Then I make people free stuff, but you probably already have people doing that :p

I ordered MoM for £7.49 inc del. Once that arrives I'll make a RK tinker to complete the lot. I'm really not bothered about leveling up as much as I like making shiny things.

Currently have a Scholar LM, Woodsman Minstrel, and Armorer Captain.

Yea, I just finished going through a huge stack of light leathers, got Master Apprentice Forrester, mailed them over to my Armorer and I had to quit as it was a few minutes to 7 am.

I woke up early.

I need to level up my crafting stuff :(

F2P has a bad sound to it for me. I haven't had a subscription for a few months and I was gonna get one again. I'll most likely still be going for the 75 quid lifetime sub just because it's great value.

Even though it's gonna be free to play, I don't want to take advantage of that feature simply because a lot of necessary things like character slots (I mean come on!) are limited with free playing. You even get less support when you don't pay, and that's what bothers me. It's like giving a half-assed version of the game out. :/ I also don't fancy the cash shop, those easily ruin sites and games.

In general I'd agree with you, but having played D&D and seen how it's turned the game around I'm kind of looking forward to it. If it takes off to the same extent D&D did, it means we're guaranteed development all the way to Mordor. I don't think we'd have gotten many more expansions otherwise, the last one was paid for, and a bit pathetic compared to some of the free ones we've gotten.

Also, it's not really free to play, it's just a different way of having a free trial. If you want to get anywhere at all or enjoy the game as it's meant to be, you'll end up paying in some form, either with a monthly sub as a vip, with a lifetime, or through one off payments to get yourself up to that level.

Yeah, I mean how dare Turbine/Codemasters try to look after their existing player base. It reeks of bad business, giving people limited access to a free game in the hope they'll buy the full product. People just need to start giving this stuff away for free.

man someone needs to tell these guys in the 21st century i used the "downloader" on the codemasters website and after it downloaded a silly ammount of gb it asks me where to put the files.

it gives me 9x 1gb .bin files.

wow im expected to burn 9 cds? lol WUT! so i download a tool to mount the cds and erm the discs dont actually work i double check the readme and it just says install from the DVD
what dvd? ive got 9x cd images

why cant they do streaming clients like warhammer and i believe wow has now or atleast download a proper installer!

im grabbing an almost 10gb LOTRO_V2B8_HighRes_Installers_ENG.zip from gamershell hopefully its not just a bunch of "CD" ..... images again

I had no problems downloading mine, although I did have it on CD, I had to get all the updates and high res downloads and it took a whole day.

And why exactly are you trying to put it onto CDs and not your hard drive? The download version is not meant to go onto CDs, you put it on your hard drive and if you want to back it up, use a large enough USB stick or external hard drive.

Welcome to the 21st century? Trying to burn a 12.5 Gb download onto CDs isnt going to work these days.

You will still be able to pay fees, or buy extra content permanently in the cash shop.

What it would mean for you, is that if you havnt had a subscription for a few months, you can still log into the game and access your characters, enter the game world, and play the limited portion of the game. If a person wants more, then they have to pay.

This has been tried and tested in DDO and turned out to be a major success. People can play the game permanently with limited acces, and when they feel like playing more they buy the content. The game ended up with hundreds of thousands more players, and lots more cash for Turbine to keep the game and new updates and content going.

Now they release new content as mini expansions that people buy in the cash shop, or get immediately if paying the fee.

Either way, the £75 lifetime sub is still hugely better, I wouldnt hesitate to buy it if you want to play the game for even just 6 months.

Scaled Instaces

Turbine Executive Producer Kate Paiz explained one of the most notable ones to us with a new system that will allow the dungeons of LotRO to scale by level. This will allow players to return to older dungeons such as The Great Barrows and experience it all over again at an appropriate level. Loot will also scale, so there should be plenty of shiny items to go around.

Another feature will involve new Session Play content that will allow players to experience the game as a Ranger and learn about Aragorn’s forefathers. Previously, Rangers could only be used in PvMP, so the new Session Play missions will offer a chance to experience one of the Rangers in PvE and learn more about the lineage of one of LotRO’s most notable characters.

But:

Enedwaith will introduce four new dungeons to the game that will be associated with the new epic storyline. Three of those dungeons will be solo instances and the fourth will be an open world dungeon, much like the Bree reputation dungeon of Haudh Iarchith. While there won’t be a focus on the group instance game with this update, Turbine representatives ensured us that new instances are on the books for the following update.

And:
For fans that have been concerned about mounted combat possibly being cut, Kate Paiz confirmed that it is still on the table for the Rohan expansion. Along with that will be more we were also told that Rohan will be set post-orc work camps, so much of the Ent forest around Isengard will already have been destroyed, but players will have the chance to experience the forest in its full past glory through Session Play.

Wow. A lot to take in.

edit: ooo lookie, Isengard is part of the Rohan expansion?
Slow down, I said the road to Isengard, not to Isengard. You’ll have to wait for that in the upcoming Rohan expansion for that.
