Long Haul flight tips...

I'm flying east and it turns out we land at 6:50AM Sunday morning after departing 8:20PM today and travelling for a full 24 hours. Will stay awake through the day Sunday and then crash out until Monday morning.

Most short haul flights are narrow body aircraft. Most long haul flights are wide body aircraft which are indeed larger and depending on configuration can be more spacious.

A wider aircraft being larger than a narrow aircraft, who'd have thought?

In my experience there is generally the same amount of space in cattle class on any jet flight, long or short haul, ie around 32" pitch, some of the better airlines offer a bigger pitch and some offer it for more money and call it premium economy, 1st & business are usually very spacious (there's enough room to lie down on many long haul flights). Some of the turboprops I've been on have felt really crammed though, no idea if the seats were actually smaller or a figment of my imagination due to the plane being smaller.

Unless you manage to get a bulkhead seat with the extra leg room then stay away from them.

This is where the people with young children / babies will sit and if you want a better chance for a quieter doze on the plane, far away can be better.

Sitting near the toilets is great if you need to go but people will usually pool around that area as they tend to be near exit doors and have a habit of leaning on the back of the isle seats, very irritating if you are trying to sleep.

Isle seats I find are easier if the other people are not always in and out for a walk or the toilet but make sure you keep your legs clear of the isle or you are likely to get a trolly in the kneecap.

Singapore airlines are pretty good. Flown with them Standard and first class (long haul). First class is wonderful, worth the stretch from business class if you can make it. Standard to Busness class tends to be a big jump. I would stick to economy or prem economy for short haul.

Just taking a couple of sample dates, London to Singapore 25th Sep -> 17 Oct.
Standard: GBP 489
Business: GBP 3500
First: 5800

Singapore airlines also, as someone else mentioned, provides power for laptops etc for Standard (economy) class. No need to worry your laptop is going to run out watching movies. They also have the clamshell seats on the A380.

I tend to use the onboard video for stuff I have not yet seen, take a few movies and maybe a series or two (CSI or the like) on the laptop and have a good book so I can chop and change and not get too bored with one or the other.

Eva Airways was pretty good going to Thailand from London. They had the clamshell seats in prem economy.

I would advise staying away from BA for economy as my last couple of experiences with them were terrible.

As for the A380, I found the seats are pretty wedged in so not as great flying this plane as I expected. Business and first class should be pretty good.

I'm sure the vast majority of people on here couldn't stump up £6k for a bloody flight, or even £3.5k for that matter.

My advise: dress smart and get there early then enquire about an upgrade.

upgrades tend to go to the poeple high up in the FF systems these days

Business Class is great but stupidly expensive, I have only ever done it once long haul with my own money and that was subsidised with miles, I find Premium Economy adequate for most flights and it's a fraction of the price

I disagree, business class is definitely worth the extra, however I don't really think it's a proper suggestion.

Business class is definetely a lot better than economy on long haul - but not worth how much extra it costs , if it was double the price of economy fair enough , but not 5-7x as expensive :o

Edit : Yeah the most likely way of getting an upgrade is if you're a FF holder, I used to use my Dad's card as we have the same name and got upgraded on a couple of occasions , sadly not silver tier anymore though :(

dunno if its been said yet, but take some sudafed during the flight and a couple of hours before landing. It helps with any ear popping and pressure in your head.

Does anyone have experience of Air India? And specifically the Boeing 777-300er Jet/Airbus Jet? I've never flown long haul and am worried about leg room and being able to sleep most of the flight.

I hate flying, only done short haul (eu) recently, I spend most of the flight sweating like a tap lol gripping the armrests when feeling any movement, music on and trying to sleep but waking up again with any movement of plane lol.

I love landing though, rubber on concrete is all good.

Any issues with planes and sleeping tablets/etc?

Yea, make sure you are in the lounge before you take them, that way if you fall asleep at least a steward will notice rather than you being halfway across the terminal slumped in a corner somewhere lol.

I flew Air India from LHR to JFK. The flight originated in India and by the time it was coming in to JFK the majority of the toilets were blocked up with people shoving wads of toilet paper down.

I would personally stay clear.

I have also flown Swiss Air business class (Singapore to Switzerland) and TBH would not recommend.

The service was fine, the seats were fine but when they converted in to beds, they had a slope to them (i.e. were not flat) so the feet end was lower and had pretty bad issues trying to sleep as it felt like I would just slide off the end at any moment :D.

It is probabily not just Swiss Air who has those sorts of seats but they are the only airline I have done long haul with in Business class.
