Canned Laughter

QI is awesome, except for the episode(s) where they had the fat, drunken numpty on. You know the one. Fry and the others spent the whole show cringing whenever he opened his mouth.

I can't remember his name because I've blocked it out, along with everything else about him :p His only claim to fame is being, fat, drunk, and spouting nonsense in the name of comedy. Should be shot, imho :p

I think i know who you mean but can't remeber his name either. Was it John Vergo?

Johnny Vegas?

a lot of older shows had it like Red Dwarf, The Fast Show etc. not sure if it was good or bad but when I look back it just seems to suit it (probably because I've never seen them without the laughter. lol it's just part of the show now)

I think it was def noticable when it wasn't there with the Back To Earth eps of Red Dwarf and if I'm honest I did miss it! I think i'd have prefered it with than without

red dwarf was played back to an audience, those parts that werent performed live, and that laughter was recorded - i dont think RD ever used canned laughter. canned laughter is an artificial laughter track edited in. they never did this.

Some people do not realise this though!

Where can you buy canned laughter... do they sell it at Tesco?

Brill, absolutely Brilliant. I'm laughing out loud!

I used to enjoy 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Drop the Dead Donkey, I don't know if those two had canned/studio laughter?

Yeah, Regarding Red Dwarf - Those outtake videos such as "Smegups" actually pans round to show the audience on a number of occassions.

It's one of those - sounds canned but it was that funny, people actually did laugh that much!

You know it's a character? Possibly not too far from his real persona but he's not half as stupid/drunkard as he likes to make out when appearing on things.

Why would you want to watch someone pretending to be drunk and stupid? If it's an act, or not, he's still behaving like a moron.

On QI it stands out a mile because the other comedians are at least attempting to be clever as well as funny.

Vegas is comedy for people who don't get regular jokes, and have to laugh at sheer stupidity, because it's all they can understand. There, I said it.

Mock the Week hasn't been the same since frankie left :(

"tru dat"-(that is true)... frankie was the funniest, till he left. Hugh's impressions are very funny, but his jokes are like that your dad would make. Andy parsons thinks hes funny, every single "scenes we'd like to see" he comes up to the microphone with a stupid face on, the audience laugh for some reason, which is ironic since hes not funny, and then there's Russell Howard, i find him funnier than Andy, but he recycles sooo many jokes, i honestly turn it on sometimes thinking its a repeat. If we uses the "burp-mouth rape" (" oh thank goodness i didnt fart") joke again i will actually rape him myself, or more likely continue to dislike his recylced jokes. Oh and every single woman pannelist they have is abysmal, hate to be sexist, but they're all so poor. I extremely dislike that iranian(?) comedian, shilpa someone, "oh look im foreign, look how funny it is to be foreign, and a girl, how on earth do i survive being such a minority, ahaha ahahah ahha.."

rant over

I cannot STAND Charlie Brooker! He takes smugness to the next level and its really tiresome. He's on a par with Jeremy Kyle with irritating smugness and self importance

THANKYOU, well not about the Jeremy Kyle quote, im indifferent he doesnt affect/offend me since i dont ever watch him, i also have a strong dislike of Stephen Fry , though i've never put my finger on why. I also dislike that british guy(whos QI quite a lot), who's slightly overweight, who rants on and on about meaningless ecounters that i don't care about, and Fry always laps it up. It's like, this is a comedy, not a dinner party, keep the borderline suicidal anecdotes to yourself, they're mildly amusing at best, but just make you look like a pompus pr*ck.. if anyone can tell me who i'm talking about that might help the confusion of others.. I think i dislike them because he always pokes out the uncivilised manners of others like hes so much better....

I'm not sure who you're talking about either :p I love stephen fry but I can see why people dont, he can be a bit pompous granted but he's not on the same level as Brooker lol

The whole smugness thing is Charlie Brooker's whole act :D He doesn't take himself seriously at all, I think he's hilarious, probably one of my favourite tv presenters/writers at the moment.

I dislike canned laughter after long periods, but I think it can actually make a show more enjoyable if used well and not too blatantly... I laugh more when I hear other people laughing, and if I laugh more, I enjoy the show more! However, sometimes when it gets played over the really bad jokes it just annoys me... Would be ideal if it wasn't required, but it's a good way of making OK comedy much more entertaining.

Women just make rubbish comedians - Some of them are mediocre, but usually seem to get laughs by being really dirty... I'm bored of female comedy after half an hour. I wish they wouldn't bother putting women on comedy programs - having mediocre female comedians talk about sex on TV doesn't really do any good for feminism or the program's quality.
