My new pet

Glad to see that your congo has the brown bits on the top of his head too. I thought mine had grown some infection or that they were mites at first! Same with the browning legs.. i wasn't sure that was normal :o

Yeah he's always had the red bit on his head, it seems to change though. Occasionally he gets really deep red eyes and turns into devil mantis, i'll try and get a pic next time it happens. The browning of the legs is new though.

This happened for the 1st time to both mine today, I got home to find both their eyes had turned into a reddish brown, thought it was strange.. Glad its not just mine then.

Also both mine have always had brown legs.. One is looking much more brown overall than the other as though his green skin is quite transparent and you can see brown inside. Maybe he will be brown after his next shed. I hope not though, might have to buy some greenery for the housing see if enviroment helps get them back to full green.

Yea i've had the red/brown eyes too - i thought i was just weird lighting or my eyes were tired!

I'd read about how some mantids change their colour over time to match their surroundings - eg ghosts turning green when kept with green plants from young. It made me consider keeping some of mine in blue surroundings, to try to create a cool blue mantis :D
Probably only works for natural colours from its normal environment though

Harold was portraying some strange behaviour when I woke up this morning, he was really close to his twigs almost hugging them and facing downwards in his jar:

However I popped a locust in and he bolted across the glass for it so he must have just been really really hungry and was scouting the floor for prey?

Or just gone a bit bonkers...... :p

Edit: congrats on your Congo Rooboftw. What stage is he/she at?

I've caught my congo doing that a few times, just hugged in really close to the twigs so it must be a normal thing! :)

Ah yes think its like a camouflage position they adopt, mine do it regular looks quite funny. Seem to be using more locusts than normal with the warm weather, also the locusts are growing even faster than before, think some are pre-sub/sub-adult now as they look quite big and can see the wings coming through.

Ok heres Stealthetta L4 Ghost, excuse the pics shes a bit camera shy today for some reason, ill try tomorrow when shes finished her flies, shes usually a lot slower.

Great pics there! I tried to get some of my two but my camera sucks too much, will have to see if I can rob the missus's phone at some point and get some pics up! :)

Yea she is a terracotta colour all round just the camera only picks it up when the light hits certain parts, also shes now big enough i dont need the magnifying glass for the camera to focus on her lol

Edit/ Shes still very camera shy today :( so no chances for some really good shots, i may try late at night when shes a little sleepy :D

Is she adult/sub-adult? Damn, she grew fast!

I got 5 bud wings about 2 weeks ago. I love how they chase down their prey! Not sure on the sex of any of them though. This one just moulted yesterday, and so is very thin.

I can't tell if the blue line creates a 7th segment or not.
