So many players were off the boil totally last night, it was untrue. I felt Carragher and Cole had good games (and James, really) and everyone else played poorly. Barry was clearly off the pace. Heskey was his usual self, though he received far less of the ball than usual.

What strikes me as odd, is if they're going to play Rooney off Heskey, with the hope Heskey holds the ball up for Rooney to score, is when Rooney drops off deep to collect the ball we're effectively asking Heskey to score.

If Barry isn't up to par, can't we play Gerrard and Lamps in the middle again and bring Cole in? I'd like to see Cole feature a lot more. I'd even like to see us risk someone like Defoe ahead of Heskey (or the usual suggestion of Gerrard behind Rooney).

At least I'm not French.

What we lack is ball winners in midfield like scholes the types of players that can nick the ball and are full of energy.

Have you watched Paul Scholes tackle? For all his undoubted skill it's like watching a car accident in slow motion - you can see it going wrong and yet you know that nothing will change the end result. I'd call Scholes a few things but a ball winner isn't one of them.

LOL yep id say the same...its excruciating seeing him going in for a tackle..if there ever was a player that was clueless at tackling its him without a doubt:p

Here's my formation for Wednesday

Pace, width, good connections down the middle to encourage playing the ball on the ground, skill of J Cole to link with Rooney, no donkey strikers up front encouraging useless long balls that nobody can do anything with.

Mate that'd be the worst team at the WC, Dawson as a lone CB? Slovenia would score 5. England won't create many chances, England's best chance for goals are from set pieces or scrappy play, England are the Bolton of international football

i think some of our players think they have a right to the england shirt. they know they are going to get picked for the next game.

some of them need to be dropped so they know they have to work for a place in the team

i hope we beat slovenia and not just by a scrappy 1-nil but in some style. it will alos sned a message out to the other teams

abybody think that rooney will get bad recpetion when he gets home like beckham 98 or worse?

Only if we don't qualify. Could come in for a bit of stick come Wednesday though. Wouldn't be surprised if they boo his name when the lineups are announced and it'll be completely deserved.

oh my:mad: thats is going to kill any confidence he has. i think he's just going to think to himself 'forget it'

to me he is not someone who takes into account what the fan have gone thorugh to get to south africa ie saving up/taking holidays etc.. its not as if all the fans get paid 100k a week

James had a good game? Were you watching a different match? I thought it was nervous and unconvincing. More than once he punched when he should have caught. When he got the ball he mostly just hoofed it up pitch, more often to an Algerian than not. Still, at least he made no howling mistakes.

I thought Barry played pretty well, he saved our ramshackle defence more than once. However, he looked like a player just back from injury, and it's a measure of how badly the rest of them played that his performance stood out. Hopefully, he'll improve for the next game.

Terry was dire. Johnson hopeless in defence. The whole defensive backline looked unsure, shaky and ill disciplined. Carragher and Cole put in decent individual performances but we'll be without Carragher for the next game anyway.

Rooney needs to be better supported at the front, Joe Cole needs to be in the starting line up. And when we're getting nowhere, Capello needs to bring on players that can make a difference not offer weak straight swaps. Why on earth was SWP for Lennon his first choice of change?
