New car time - been a long time

It happens in every thread so I may aswell add to it here.

Why not buy a much better car for £10k and have £10k left in the bank? :p

It's hardly a terrible car is it, I wouldnt have bought one either but it's not as if he's just bought a tedious diesel or something. The problem is, if you want something reasonably new then £10k doesnt buy much. It buys a lot of nice cars but they are all 5+ years old unless you want something drossy like a hot Corsa or something.

Well I've not got it yet, deposit is down (refundable).

It's taken me an hour to work out what a "stealer" is.

Right been to see it, drove it, loved it, bought it.

Couple of questions thought about some "extras" on offer;

1. Gap insurance, basically tops up the difference between what you would get from your insurance company and what you paid for the car in the event of it being written off. eg write it off in 12 months, insurance pays you 15k the gap insurance tops that up to 20k.
£400 for 3 years cover.

2. VW service pack, £300 and free services for 2 years.

I know the pros and cons and can see the point in the service pack, the gap insurance though I'm unsure of, anyone with any experience of it?

Do not buy gap insurance from the dealer. If you want it, buy it online from someone else and pay about £100 for it. Also, unless its return to invoice gap don't bother. It's actually a completely unneccesary product and you don't NEED it, it's basically a gamble - its like you are betting you'll crash it and they are betting you wont, the result being if you do crash it you profit from it. Up to you if you want that.

VW Service pack - If you are paying £300 its not 'free' servicing. It's £300 for 2 years worth of services. Ask yourself how many services you will need in that time and how much they cost. If its more than £300 worth, buy the package, if its not, dont.

My hunch is dont given that presumably its just been serviced, so will need probably one service in the next 2 years?

I think (need to check though ) that you get 2 services for that, 2011 and 2012.

Good advice on the gap insurance though.

Less than 1 year old and 3500 miles, I don't think the dealer would have serviced it before you take it as the car isn't due a service till it's 2 years old or 18k miles.

£300 for 2 services is ok value for money IMO.

Sales person tried to sell my GF GAP insurance on a MINI! A car which, at the time, was as near depreciation-proof as you can find!

Don't listen to peterattheboro, he thinks '£10k' is the answer for everyone ;).

What colour did you go for?

Regarding whether paying for servicing up front is worth it or not, are you on the long life service plan? If you get interval + brake fluid + inspection 1 then it's probably worth it.

It's the midnight blue metalic, was completly spotless as well.

With regards the actual service plan, I admit to glazing over tbh when they were talking about it, it's bad I know but I said I would think about it between now and Monday just to shut the Buisness Manager up, and it only really dawned on me it might be a good deal on the journey home. I will speak to them on Monday.

Oh for anyone that has one, the iPod connection, should the cable be in there or do I need to buy one?

Don't the answer to that specific model, but some cars come with cable as standard others you have to order it for.

Ask the dealer to bung one in, I'm sure they will do that for you! Afterall you have just spent £19k with them.

Surely it will be due a service when it's a year old or 9k miles (assuming that's the set mileage between services)

No, I'm almost certain that on the new VWs the service intervals are 18k / 24mth.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me!

Hmmm thrashing it, the wife was actually scared when I put the thing in sport mode on the dsg. It's response was quite suprising if I'm honest I didn't expect it to be as savage as it was. The car I had before this golf was a mid engine 2L MR2 and driving the scirocco brought all the silly smiles back.

He's not going to get 2 services in 2 years surely, it will be 1?

The car will automatically be set from the factory for a long life service plan with a maximum distance/time of 18k/24months but the distance/time varies on how the car is driven with the 2L TFSI engine it will normally flash up for a service around 12-14k. Very few cars will hit the 18k mark unless they are on the motorway all the time. You can check the distance/time to the next service with the ignition on but the engine not running hold done the trip reset button for 3 or 4 seconds and it will flash up the details on the display.

You can ask for the car to switched to fixed servicing which is every 10k/ 1year.

Servicing isn't that expensive £165 for the first then £195 for the next and it switches between them. I wouldn't pay the £300 for a 2 year service plan as you are only likely to have one service.

Yeah with this in mind maybe it's not such good value for money! Unless if course you're doing a few miles and can squeeze two services out of two years.

Don't forget his car is already almost a year old (Sep 09), so if the service deal is two years from date of purchase, he will have his first service in Sep 11 (likely sooner than this) and interval 1 can be brought forward to June 2012.<---This last bit is what LOAM needs to check imo.

I cannot imagine a dealer doing a service early so that its included with a service pack. BMW certainly wont do this with service inclusive so I doubt VW would either. Assuming he gets roughly 18 month intervals the first service will be be in March 2011 and the second in Sepember 2012, after his service package has expired.

And also after the world has ended.
