Newbie 1st custom build need help please.

Indeed, best of luck with the build :D I you have any further questions please feel free to post and we will try our best to help out.

There are a couple I would suggest also picking up now, as they will help with the build and stand you in good stead for the future.

First, is some MX3 thermal compound. This is much better than the stuff pre-applied to the H50 and this tube will last you for years on dozens of builds.

Second is this thermal paste cleaning kit, it allows you to cleanly remove thermal paste and prepare the surface for a new application.

Finally, the Lian Li case doesn't have any mounts for 2.5in hard disks (like the intel SSD), therefore you will either need to have it loose or get a bay adapter like this.

One final question. The motherboard I have chosen is reliable workhorse ya?

Its a very good board indeed. If you have any problems - you have a 3 year warranty, but i'm sure that won't be needed.

Thank you as that the next question I was going to ask.

You know your stuff ...

Yes, I will include them.

Oh yes ... I think there will be more question from me once I receive all the kits.

:D

Folks,

Thanks for all your advice.

I will make the order tomorrow afternoon if I get the time to go out otherwise it will be in the evening.

I will take my sweet time to build it as far as I am concerned.

Cheers

if you get the chance, try and order the RAM and the blu ray drive tonight or tomorrow morning, or else the price will go up on them (they are both in the one week special offers, which change on wednesday - usually early afternoon.

good advice, even with two lots of delivery charges, the money saved from those two items is greater

one other small thing - have you taken cooling into account?
A lot of people replace the stock fan on the h50 with something like a sharkoon silent eagle or a fractal design, as apparently the stock fan is noisy.

it seems the case already comes with fans, but they could also be cheap nasty noisy things (i couldnt find any info on them) which might want replacing at some point as well.
But at the same time they could be just fine, so i guess you'll have to wait and see on that one...

Thanks for the suggestion but I will see how it goes with the stock H50 fan before I do anything to it.

Just ordered my unit but not very happy ... read the next post.

Not Happy ...

Hi Folks,

Just to update you that I have ordered all the specs as discussed yesterday as promised but I am not a happy bunny for several reasons.

1) The price suddenly jumped up when I ordered! Someone must have seen me coming ...

The Corsair XMS3 4GB jumped from £94.99 (inc VAT) to £109.99 (inc VAT) and it's not even Wednesday yet. £15 different ! :(

The Samsung SH-B083L/RSBP 8x BluRay ROM/16xDVDRW drive ... jumped again from £49.99(inc VAT) to 53.99(inc VAT) ...

2) Out of Stock ... arrghhh ... suddenly Lian Li PC-351B was no longer available and I ended up buying a Red PC-351R case instead ... not happy at all especially the price jumped from £88.99 (inc VAT) to £104.99 (inc VAT).

Why on earth different colour demands more? In fact I just wanted plain aluminum colour or no colour at all ... aarrggghhhh ... IMO they should not charge differently for different colour. Just stock the colour that people want and sell more of it instead.

3) Out of Stock ... arrghh ... ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover and Surface Purifier - 60ml Kit ... so I guess I need buy it from my local computer store now.:(

I am not bothered about a few quids but the different between the price of Lian-Li case PC-351Black Vs PC-351Red is £16 simply for the different colour and that's not even the colour I want ... arrghhh ... I just want plain aluminum colour that's all.

Final price jumped from approx £1254.77 to £1285.46 ... £30 plus different ... which I could used for upgrading the fan on H50 ... arrghhhh ... but I am okay with RAM price changes though for whatever reason.

:(

huh, for some reason they updated their "this week only" today instead of tomorrow. looks like you got screwed over a bit there :/

i know youve ordered, but if you want/get the chance to change, there is:

1.) A different blu ray drive drive there for 45 quid, but tis only 4x as opposed to 8x. i have no idea how slow/fast 4x/8x is on blu ray, but it might be worth looking at.

2.)Some different RAM for 100 quid. its 1333mhz, but with 7-7-7 timings. basically means it should perform on par with 1600mhz with 9-9-9 timings. (you may have to tweak the ram/fsb ratio a bit in overclocking, but thats simple, and we can discuss that when you get to overclocking. both this RAm and the drive is the same total price as the old drive and RAM before the price hike

not really much i can suggest about the case. perhaps do some looking around elsewhere, or ask OC when they might be expecting some more stock?

sorry to hear that pal - you win some/you lose some...

Have you ordered it yet?

For the RAM, I would suggest having a look at this stuff. Its just as good as the corsair and £10 cheaper.

If you don't find the Arcticlean kit locally, I would suggest getting this instead. Its basically the same stuff that is in the Arcticlean 1 bottle and the bottle is bigger. Unfortunately, that means you won't get Atcticlean bottle 2 (the surface purifier), but you should be fine without it.

It is a shame that the Samsung Blu Ray drive has gone up in price, but tbh it is still a good deal. A month or so ago Blu Ray ROM/DVDRW drives cost £80. If you do want to claw some cash back, the OEM version of the drive costs the same as you were going to pay before (it says it still comes with the software).

As for the Lian Li case, unfourtunately it is out of stock. I can understand you are annoyed that the red one is more expensive, but you don't always have to buy the case at OCUK (especially if you do not like the colour). You may want to consider sending OCUK a webnote to see when they expect the black version to come back in stock, it could well be very fast - it's a popular mATX case.

That is a very nice drive. My parents use on in their HTPC and it is fast enough and very quiet. However, it is a read-only drive - so it can't write to DVDs and CDs like the samsung can (which now only cost a little bit more).

that kingston RAM is rated at 1.9v.
the core i series only seems to like RAM upto 1.65v

Ah, Ofcourse, please ignore that link then.

This RAM may be worth a look. It runs at the right voltage. I have a triple channel kit of this type of RAM in my machine and it has been running very well. However, I have heard some people having problems getting it to run at 1600MHz.

there does seem to be a lot of grumblings around these forums about OCZ golds (sorry andi, i dont mean to keep contradicting you :p). look at the comments here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18144235

that said, i run OCZ platinums and they run just fine for me

Hi Guys,

Yes, I have ordered the lot.

I expected the RAM price to fluctuate from time to time for whatever reason so I am not that bothered but for the casing price variation because of the colour that I think it's a bit too much ...

I will call them tomorrow to see if they are getting some in before the delivery.

:(

absolutely no problemo whatsoever

bet you're eyeing up a pretty dam nice keyboard/set of speakers now :p

Yes, have narrowed down to Logitec X-140 speakers (can't play loud music/film where I live) and am eyeing up Microsoft wireless comfort desktop 5000 (Win7 compatible) keyboard & Mouse too. :D

p/s: system is stable now. Just got my printer working with Win7x64 two hours ago so all go. hhmmm ... next is finding alternative to bloody Adobe Flash plugins and perhaps camera driver (not sure I need that as I might just get a SD memory card reader).
