Final Fantasy 8 - an appreciation thread!

Nah not really. Its said to be down to pure luck but if you pop the lid its just scrolling through til you get it. Most infuriating thing in the world is over shooting it and having to scroll for ages again.

Oh and he's a little factoid for you to chew on....

One thing I spotted (maybe you did too) is that Rinoas dog is called "Angelo", which is a male name, but the dog is actually female (so it should be called "Angelina").
I think there is only ONE place in the whole game where the dogs gender is referred to, and Rinoa refers to it as 'her'.

So there you go - Female dog with a male name. :p

Its a taiwanese ladydog!

Edit - Or a hybrid

! haha chewed on and laughed!

Did not know the reference to being a female dog always assumed it was a male dog, is that a japanese to English translation fail? :p

Do you (seek - bevysters) have a favourite part in the story line?

Been a long time since I last played it. Gonna have to pick up a copy and give it a replay.

Loved the part where Squall rescues Rinoa in space and they find the Ragnarok.

Also, love the CGI where Esthar put Rinoa in that machine thing (forget why tbh - because she's a witch or something) and Squall busts in with his gunblade and sets her free. Cheesy but awesome. :D

That is an awesome part in space. The solitude and the running out of air causing panic... Great atmosphere it created!

And the part you mention with the machine I think they try to send Adels power into Rinoa as she now has Edeas power granted from Ultimecia so try to create a super sorceress. Ultimately ends up with time compression though. :p :)

The whole time-compression thing was a bit too wtf.

FF8's story was epic in places, but on the whole very strange.

(No stranger than the Jenova thing from FF7 though I guess).

I'm not even sure they explain what the hell time compression is!

I prefer the Jenova story, being my favourite FF in all. :p They keep ballteasing at a remake for the PS3 and it's annoying even though I'm certain they won't for years. :p

I never understood it in the slightest tbh. Do they explain exactly what Jenova is?

A 'thing' from space that is Sephiroths mother.

I thought it was Sephiroths mum but was genetically engineered to create more sephiroths/monsters so shinra could have more power, it did control cloud aswell though at points... I really need to play through it again though. :p

Could be wrong just my interpretation.

But to get back to FFVIII I always thought it weird that there was a love thing going on between teacher and student with Squall and Quistis! (Surely that is innapropriate!). This storyline is especially prevalent during the earlier stages of the game. Although her affections seemed a little one-sided. Basically Quistis seemed to fancy Squall - like when she took him alone to the balcony in the training area of Balamb Garden, but he obviously didn't feel the same about her. (poor Quistis).

Also, in the CGI sequences, Quistis looks a lot like Jenifer Anniston! :p

I understand what you mean, japan is known to be a lot more leniant in sexual terms is it not?

Quistis has a little moment to herself (just after the missile base thing I think?) where she says she loves him or along those lines but squall is just oblivious and she is also just a bit mad at herself for letting herself succumbing to those feelings to a student, granted she is 19 herself (I think).

Edit - It's cool jen anniston is hot! ;)

Major FFVII Spoilers Follow:

I think you're half right. Again i could be wrong but my interpretation is: Jenova is 'the calamity from the sky', her arrival on earth (from space) resulted in the death of the Ancients (or at least, all but one of the ancients, namely Aeris), presumably due to a battle/war. At some point she was trapped in the North Crater, i'm assuming in a last ditch attempt by the ancients to preserve themselves.

Skip forward several thousand years and Jenova is discovered by Shin-Ra but they make a mistake, they believe her to be an Anchient. They use cells from her, combine with Mako and infuse them into humans in order to create super soldiers, it's a very effective technique so they take it one further. They inject it into the foetus of a child still in the womb, this child is Sephiroth.

After some time Sephiroth discovers the experiments that created him, believes himself to be an Anchient and decides to kill humans, the 'parasites' he believes killed the Anchients.

If Advent Children is to be taken into account, at some point Sephiroth learns of the real origin of Jenova and decides to transform the Earth into an empty vessel to travel the universe, just as she used to do to planets millions of years ago.

Still in the womb... So that would be the womb of his mother right?

So his mother isn't Jenova?

Bleh, your post just furthers my belief that the plot to FFVII makes absolutely no logical sense! :D

His mother is the scientist that worked with Prof Hojo - Lucrecia iirc. Though he considers Jenova to be his mother due to the experiments which made him what he was.

Re FF8 Love it when you start a battle, and then Odin comes in and finishes it for you immediately :D Also the Junction system is my favourite leveling system of any of the FF games so far.

I loved the card game in FF8 tbh. Best mini game to date imo.

I think I spent more time playing the card game than I did the actual game

That said FF8 is still one of the few FFs I have not yet completed :( I remember getting when I was younger playing it for ages amongst other games. Then FF9 came out and so I started playing that instead of finishing FF8.

That said I got FF8 on my PSP, had it for a while... I really should get stuck into tbh.

iirc Time compression is explained by Odine at some point. Ultimecia is a sorceress from the future who wants to bring about time compression as only she can exist in it, or something like that...its where all time exists at once, the past present and future merge into one piece of time.

also iirc originally ultimecia is controlling Adel (the sorceress originally in charge of Esthar), after Adel is defeated by Laguna and placed in Statis in space Ultimecia then begins to conrol Edea. While Ultimecia is in control of Adel, she learns of Ellone's ability to send people's conciousness back in time because Odine is experimenting on Ellone during this time.

Something like that anyway!!
