Hey guys,

Got my new case and with my new hdd you can feel it rumble a fair bit on the desk.

The case uses a tooless securing thing and it just slots into the screw holes.

Was wandering what you guys find the best to stop the vibration from getting through to the desk ?

thanks !

Failing all else have a look at the NoiseMagic NoVibes kit. They are very good at noise dampening your HDD from your case to the point it's almost silent :)

You shouldn't need to buy anti-vibration kits lol, if you have a decent modern hard drive and rubber feet on your case you shouldn't notice it. I have 2 hard drives running (the main drive a WD 1TB caviar black) with plain old bog standard rubber feet on an antec 300 and I can't feel any 'vibration' or 'rumbles'. Silly thing to waste money on tbh.

I have my feet physically touching the case where the hard drivers are, whilst running a benchmark for HDD's avg read 86.6MB/sec I still cannot feel any 'rumble' I'd question your build.

Well, to the touch, the drive seems to have a lot more vibration than my older 320gb. (im using the 320gb as my o/s / main hdd) then the 640 as a storage tank.
The vibrations kind of make my desk "hummmmmmmmmmmmmm"

and i cannot find NoiseMagic NoVibes kit for sale in the uk?

Thanks !

I believe you it's just strange that you have noticeable vibration and noise from a modern hard drive, probably not the HDD's fault I have the same Caviar Black, guess it's just the case and the way the hard drivers are secured in, maybe not a tight enough locking design. Suppose it's something to look at when you next buy a computer case.

My WD6400AAKS was very quiet untill about 8000-9000 power on hours, then it started vibrating. I took it out my case and held it by the edges with my fingertips and the vibration was quite strong.

I have now bungied it and it's silent again, there are no signs of failure in SMART either.. touch wood.

I also use AcoustiFeet even on a carpet they make a big difference.

I can definatly recomend AcoustiFeet and a bungiemod if your suffering from vibration noise, especially for the price, they only cost me about £8 for quite a big reduction in noise.

AcoustiFeet

Bungie mod is just using elastic or bungie cord to suspend the HD in a 3.5" bay: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17697441

Here's mine, with it not being in contact with the case and being in a 3.5" bay where there is less airflow the HD temp will be higher. For me it gets up to 44C which I could live with but the rest of my system runs cooler than that, so I suspended a fan under it aswell to stop it heating up the rest of my system.

With your drive being so new I would look at returning it or getting it replaced before resorting to a bungie mod.

I bungie modded my f3 in my antec 300.

It is beautiful in its simplicity and effectiveness.

Reduces hd noise to nigh on 0, totally free just cannibalised some elasticated string, through the drive bays, two overhand knots to make loops, slot the hd in and you are away. Even mounted it backwards meaning the space in front of my intake fans is now clear and all cables are not visible, much better for cable managment, noise & the important temps. Also with the hd suspended (seriously its cool how it is literally on suspension) it wont be rattling itself to death, can't do it any harm in the long run.

Cannot reccommend it highly enough, temps will go up, but 35-45 is the sweet spot for hds, too low and failure rates actually increase.

+1 for bungee mod, I did that to mine and it made a huge difference, and I tried the akasa HD antivibration things on OCUK as well which didnt really work.

But Ive always wondered why do people put the PC case on their desk and not on the floor under the desk?

Sure, there is less dust and its easier to connect stuff to the PC (much easier actually), but having it under the desk is a bit cooler and more importantly you can put the PC a bit further away from your ears and reduce the noise level just by distance alone. Plus it gives you more desk space!
