Bogus Phone Call - "Online PC Help"

A friend who has only had a computer for a matter of months got one of these calls, even he didn't fall for it. I want to know what they're trying to do, assemble a botnet maybe?

Sadly my now ex girlfriend was falling for it... but she is extremely PC unsavy.

She turned the computer on and logged on and spent 5 minutes trying to follow their instructions before realising that actually she was logged into Ubuntu... Even she twug at that point.

I was contacted by one of these guys who said he was working on behalf of Microsoft...the **** you are I thought to myself.
I was bored so I acted really thick....I was like "really, omg I have a problem".....lol
Took him 25 mins to get me to get the registry on the screen, I kept clicking the wrong things....how thick am I eh....he then tried to get me to download a remote access program so he could access my pc and fix my problems.
I then twigged that he would more than likely then, once he had gained access to my pc, gleam whatever info he could from my pc...bank details etc.
Asked him again what company he worked for and he told me I was wasting his time and quickly put the phone down........yup I did waste his time...25 mins of it and it felt good whilst supping an ice cold can of beer :D
He tried to get me to download this http://www.ammyy.com/en/

Thread resurrection...

We had a call from one of these guys this morning. Sadly mum answered so I couldn't wind them on. She just hung up on them. I see the sites they used to use are now gone. Any idea what they're calling themselves these days?

Lol, i'd love to get one of these calls, just so I could waste their time. Sadly don't get them here :9

sadly i was tired and grumpy when they called so i just told them to **** off and hung up.

was funny listening to the stunned silence though :p

I still haven't had one :(.

Family friend who's 80+ had one and just told them to go away as he's "already got support from someone who works for a Microsoft Gold Partner".... Me :D

Someone else I know had one (he's 50-60) and downloaded the program on their website :(. But then he rung me before running it to "Check that they were a legit company that I've heard of".

If they ring me and I've got time on my hands.....

crazy i had one today... led him on for 3 mins then gave him a string of 4 letter words and racial abuse... im so clever!

i

I might be having problems with this myself but I havent dragged them out, just havent got the time to fart about playing with idiots like this. They keep trying different names for their company but want me to answer questions. I gave them an excuse about being late for work or busy but they wont give up, just had another call about 10minutes ago so I just hung up. If they do it again later I will string them along just for the hell of it. I think we may have had a lot more calls from these planks but every time my missus picks up the phone it goes dead.

I had a phone call this morning, an Indian voice, saying he was from a company working with Microsoft. He knew my name, and said I had a problem with my PC which he could resolve. My suspicions were aroused (I am a computer "virgin" I have used PCs for 10 years, mainly for WP, and email). He asked me to look at Event Viewer - which had a list of warnings and errors. He claimed he could fix the viruses responsible, then asked me to type in a URL, then to download something. At this point, I became really concerned & put the phone down.
Then I did a search, and found Nottinghamshire Police have a warning note on the scam, written in 2010. Apparently I could have been asked for about £200, or threatened with making my PC inoperable.
In fact, can scammers do that??

Now, why havent the ISPs and Microsoft not got rid of these crooks?
I have learnt a bit more about the World Wide Web!

I am aged over 65 - maybe the scammers even knew this, so a reason for them to try it on me.

Tell them you don't have a computer if you get any more calls like this.

I rec'd a call like this in the USA. I ended up using every vile word in the dictionary digging up as many insults that I could muster, aimed towards the worker and his origins. He ended up calling me an a-hole and slammed the phone down on me.

Felt good.

We had a call like this yesterday, my Grandmother answered the phone, some Indian dude was on the other end telling her that our Windows computer had a virus, that he was calling on behalf of Microsoft and wanted her to turn the computer on so that he could guide her through the process of removing said virus. She handed the phone to me like she always does when somebody calls about anything to do with technology. Just told him to **** off and he hung up, I feel sorry for the people who fall for these scams. :(

Haha i would like them to call me, i would inform them that i am a qualified ICT technican and would be aware if my computer had any problems, and then tell them i am reporting this to somebody to hopefully scare them a bit.

You really think that will scare them?

wind them up

Its fun

This is what I do, keep them on the phone while I'm watching something, talk now and then and declare after 30 mins I can't find the thing they are after on my tablet.
