Bet my new card is smaller than yours!

Interesting, what laptop is that? Didnt know there were many about you could swap the GPU's in!

What you are looking at:

Acer aspire 5935G motherboard with MXM type A slot.

Yeah there are not many about, even the newer Acer's tend not to have them atm though that's maybe a supply issue, who knows.

I am going to try the 250M too.

From notebookreview.com:

Aspire 5739G - MXM-A, HD 4570, GT 130M, GT 240M
Aspire 5935G - MXM-A, HD 4570, GT 130M
Aspire 7735G - MXM-A (verified with photo), HD 4570, Upgrade to GT 130M
Aspire 7738G - MXM-A, GT 130M
Aspire 8935G - MXM-A, HD 4650, HD 4670, GT 130M (Note: although there is room in the 8935G for an MXM-B board, the heatsink design is not able to cover the MXM-B's memory chip placement. So it's an MXM-A machine).

Aspire 8940G - MXM-B, GT 240M, GTS 250M

Aspire 4935G - Checked service guide, GPU is embedded in motherboard.
Aspire 5536G - Checked service guide, GPU is embedded in motherboard.
Aspire 5738G - Checked service guide, GPU is embedded in motherboard.
Aspire 5942G - Posted elsewhere, GPU is embedded in motherboard.
Aspire 8942G - Not.

So now confirmed that MXM-A GT240M cards work in the 5935G

Not sure why the 6935G isn't in that list - I have a 6935G with 9600mGT MXMa :)

It has MXM type II.

There are two generations of MXM:

MXM I, II, III, IV, HE Etc are all Gen1.

MXM type A and B are Gen2.

Gen1 and Gen2 cards are different and not compatable.

Part of the reason I upgraded to the 5935G from the 6935G.

----------------------

As for the performance of the 240M, its basically a desktop GT220.

The GT250M is basically a desktop GT240 so it will be interesting to see the difference.

you can also add the aspire 5942g to that list. has a 5650 as standard which is actually pretty damn good.

I beg to differ, mine has mxm... the reason i know is that I have benched this against the 9600gt in the same machine.

If you could take pics that would be great since as far as people knew it did not.

Would be great to bench the 250M vs the 5650.

will do :)... my previous machine was a msi gx620 that has a mxm 9600gt ddr3. hasn't been used in a very long time though.

Ah one version of that machine had the golden 4650 DDR3 did it not?

The most sort after MXM type II card.

Benches are going to be awile, downloading crysis and Dirt2 from steam now.

I also have both of these... I feel a laptop gfx performance chart coming on.

No idea about the card but I do know that I have quite a few mxm cards laying about now. Do these things demand a decent premium? the 9600gt ddr3 for example?

Its slightly more common (check the bay of the e) but compared to desktop cards YES.

Around £120 for that kind of card.

The 4650 DDR3 would command up to £200.

What would be amazing is a picture and part number of the 5650 mobility.

Chart could consist of 240M, 250M, 5650 (being careful of DX10 vs DX11).

The FRU of the 5942G lists the motherboard with onboard graphics. How new is your machine?

How did you get an MXM type A 9600M GT?

seems like a bit of a grey area this and I should be careful to take a few pics before diggin myself a deeper hole. (it was a while ago...)

Right I have a gx620 that I bought and kept breaking... had a few new chassis screen and other bits before I gave up with it. That machine is speced as follows:

intel p9600
4gb ddr2
mxm 9600gt ddr3

So when I couldn't be bothered to keep repairing that machine about 3 months ago I bought the acer.

i5 m520
4gb ddr3
5650 1gb ddr3

I will strip the back off the machine and see what I can do about some pics. funnily enough the mxm cards I have laying about are:

9700 ati card
8700 (i think) nv card
9600gt
and a few other ati cards x600 possibly (?)

Crysis results (625/1450/950):

1080p (very high) DX10= 6.92FPS
1280x1024 (Medium) DX10 = 26.31FPS
1280x768 (Medium) DX9 = 37.4FPS

The last result is closest to the native res of my display (1366x768)
