Spanish train kills 12 on tracks

I always wonder how you fail to notice a huge train thundering towards you.

due to there speed, you need a pretty long sighting distance. People aren't use to things closing down on them so fast. How many people cross a road with traffic doing 60-70mph let alone 125mph.

background noise can easily hide the sound of a train, until it's ontop of you.

It must be awful as a driver, absolutely nothing they can do apart from apply brakes then stick the windscreen wipers on and look away.

That's horrific. That said you do have to take into consideration that these people were being incredibly reckless crossing the tracks in the first place, that's like me chucking a hairdryer in the bath and being surprised if I get electrocuted.

Horrific but I fail to see how the passengers are blaming the station. It's obviously only that popular once a year for the festival (a bit like trying to get the Notting Hill Carnival) and people chose to cross the tracks rather than queue for the underpass.

I notice one passenger complained that there are no signs warning you that there might be trains on the rail tracks :confused:I wonder what they thought the tracks were for?

I've got to agree with this. It's horrific but ultimately its their own fault. In this instance the price paid for being impatient was just to high. Complete and utter stupidity :(.

I feel sorry for the relatives, the folks who had to pick up the mess and the driver tbh.

Were there no security or staff of any kind at the station? :S

if its a common place to cross(even though people are not meant to do it) then maybe the trains can use their horn when approaching said location to warn pedestrians.

Horrible, train drivers are taught to quickly cover their ears, scream, and shut their eyes if they're going to hit somebody. The sound and sight can give them post traumatic stress syndrome.

they do, or at least in this country.
There are whistle boards for certain locations and of course if they see anyone on track(even workers) they have to sound their horn.

I'm sure the driver would have used his horn once he saw them, just not much help if he was going fast.

This. At 125mph the train is travelling 65 metres per second. Say he saw them 500m away that means in less than 8 seconds he would have hit them.

It would have taken a few seconds to sound the horn. People's natural reaction is then to look to see what is making the noise.

So basically they had no chance, horn or not.

Everybody remember this video of the train fan almost getting taken out by a high speed train? It shows just how fast they come up on you. And the Spanish train was travelling much faster.

Horrific but despite they say it's common practice to take the chance of jumping over the train lines, it's still an idiotic thing to do.
other articles make it sound like they didnt have much option as the station was so overcrowded.

absolutely tragic story :(

lol, u gotta be pretty stupid to get run over by a train.

Its not like they just creep up silently and pounce!

Edit:- I mean... you can feel the tracks vibrate at least...

No sympathy from me, apart from the driver, bit of a shame.

I have immeasurably sympathy for the innocent people who had to witness and see this.

I have no sympathy for the reckless, lazy people who caused this. So there was a queue for the underpass? Get queuing!
