08 1.2 Automatic Micra...

Have you ever ridden 1st class on a Pendolino? They certainly aren't filled with "the unwashed masses", and have far more comfortable seats than most cars, let alone the Micra.

Of course, but one option is a 400 quid ticket, the other is about 100 quid in fuel, they aren't comparable options

I've been doing trains from Bristol to Manchester and back lots of times this last 5 weeks, can't say I've seen many people like you describe at all

They are there, you just need to be unlucky.

However if like me you never book in advance, you can of course move seat :)

they are not designed to give long-term back support whilst being seated for 6+ hours.

What are you, a 70 year old woman? Pathetic

.

Guess I don't work for crap companies then, as everywhere I've ever worked has sent me 1st on the train to London have I needed to go.

Wow, you know you've made it when your company sends you 1st class on the train tickets .

I would take the Micra every time. Private, can have the radio on as loud as you like, cheaper, totally flexible, no danger of sweaty fatbodies invading your space. In fact I'd rather take a Spiv-mobile like a diesel 3 series Bimmer than the train.

500+ miles at 40ppm and time back for travelling cost a little bit more than £100

If (as it seems from your description) it's a 2 year old car with one lady owner, then unless you're mom's been doing some serious track days in it, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't make the journey. Just do the standard things that it's wise to do before any long trip: check there's ample coolant, screenwash, air in the tyres etc, and it shouldn't make any difference whether it's a micra or a ferrari... and unless you break the law both should make the journey in about the same time... after all they can both do 70mph.

Just drive within the car's capabillities if you're used to cars with more road-holding abillity etc (i.e., don't expect it to corner like a ferrari when it isn't, or it's not the car's fault if you end up in a hedge lol)

If you didn't go over 70mph then the journey will be even longer.
And no, a Ferrari can't only go 70mph.

The thing is i have driven the thing a bit, A roads being the fastest routes i've carried it on, 50-60mph seemed a chore to keep steady, also the speedo undereads badly, 50 indicated is like 43-45, i'm assuming it has a CVT auto transmission which can be tedious. The seating position is very high and looking at how chunky the seat itself is i realised its not going to go down anymore. I am not a badge snob, my last 2 cars were a Ford and and a Seat and loved em to bits, i appreciate the offer from my mum and am not ungrateful, but i really need something thats not going to get me tired and all mashed by the time i get there as its all go from the time i arrive. Work is paying for the fuel/food and accomodation, and can't contact anyone atm about train or flight fare. I've managed to get my dad to lend me the Legacy GT-B wagon, so i expect fuel costs are gonna be a tad higher than work planned :D

Surely you'll get about 40ppm regardless of what you drive. If you use more fuel that's for you to sort out.
Why didn't they just sort your travel regardless, it saves on hassel

I've had to promise not to have 'fun' in it :)

They're not a huge corp company or anything Morba (actually a school) and the Finance dosen't have a problem with anything as long as receipts are provided.

It's nothing to do with being a huge corp. You are going away using your own vehicle, per mile payment covers more than just petrol and for good reason.

I drove up to Cambeltown in a 1.0 Corsa a couple of weeks back, 1100 miles in 4 days, even did some hairy overtaking, it was fine, better than the train anyday.

I am getting a reasonable travel allowance as well, not demanding much as this more or less secures a nice raise in pay (few more spinal points) i've been after as i've got written confirmation once i complete the course its a done deal. I know what you're saying though mate, i'd have rather flown or something tbh but sometimes you gotta just roll with what they give :)

The rate hasn't changed in a good few years in which time fuel costs have increased alarmingly and general insurance costs are higher then they used to be. Use a sensible car and you can still make a worthwhile contribution to your running costs. Last time I went to London and back I got £170 and used under £40 of fuel. The rest paid for that years service and MOT.
