Indoor cat + windows

Quick question... our cat doesn't seem too agile to say the least....

When he jumps down from the wall in the garden it is about a 7 feet drop. He lands with a pretty huge thud, is that ok for him, bit conserned if he keeps going this it will cause joint issues in the future ?

Tempted to put something on the ground that is soft for him to land on, at the moment it's just our patio.

I've seen a few mesh screens, but they all look pretty flimsy. Has anyone used any of the made for purpose products, or found another solution?

Those are common place down here to keep the flys and other insect out. Im actually surprised that you lot havent got them there as pretty much standard:confused:
The do keep cats in, You can even get ones made from a stronger mesh which stops cats from slicing them with there claws when the climb them:p

It will probably old age that affects your cat's ability or willingness to jump down from that height.

Our cat (RIP) also had a 7ft wall to jump down from. As she got older she used to announce herself at the window and then wait for someone to lift her off from the wall.

The mind boggles at the stupid posts that have been made.
First up is a poster that doesn't want his cat going outside unless it gets dirty. WTF?
And the rest of these posters seem to somehow know that their cat is happy not to be let outside even though being outside is the most natural thing for the cat. Obviously they have asked the cat if it is happy not being let outside?

Who cares as long as you have a pet...
Selfish buggers!

I love it when i get quoted when you obviously didn't read my whole post, the ppl on this forum never fail to amaze me at how they seem to know everything.

as i said before i leave my door wide open for here to come and go but she chooses to stay indoors, she will maybe just about make it out the door, sniff at the neighbours cats and munch on some grass but that's about it

so once in how long?

I regularly go into my garden (the back door is a full length glass door so they know what's out there) and the moment I start opening the door they both run away. They've lived inside for 2 years and have never once showed any desire to go outside. If they change their mind and wish to go out, I won't stop them, but I won't encourage it either. As I said, I believe forcing a cat outside when it doesn't want to go is just as cruel as keeping a cat indoors who desperately wants to go out. My cats will make the decisions themselves, I won't force it on them. Having owned cats for about 10 years, off and on, I think this is the bet way to do it, but that's only my opinion.

I will say one thing though, my indoor cats have never (so far) suffered any serious injuries, whereas both of my outdoor cats have been hit by a car, one fatally so. That's why I won't force a cat outside if it shows no interest in it.

I have an outside cat and she loves it out there, yet I'm going to have to side with the "house cats are ok" corner. Cats aren't all the same we seem to be forgetting here some cats like Whiskas some do not. I do think a cat should be given the opportunity to be allowed outside if they feel like it, but that doesn't have to apply to all cats. Indoor cats can live happy content lives too as long as they are cared for. <--- this is what really matters.

If you start with "all cats must be free" you open a mega can of worms, why stop there let dogs and cows run free, let our goldfishes into the river, our budgies into the air. I don't see what the problem is.. some cats are free some are domesticated. It's a bit too late to go purist now we have been interfering with animals/nature for aeons. Btw there's plenty of cats in the UK last time I heard, Cat Protection League said there was approximately 9 million. They're also working hard to get outdoors cats snipped as the population is rather high. I think it;s good we have wild and captive animals, never know might need to take them into space :p

Supervised?

Like kids from primary school when they go to the library they are supervised, you have to let your little ones grow up eventually.

Really you read it like that?

I read it as "I play with the kitty outside but don't want to admit it as a grown man" :D
