08 1.2 Automatic Micra...

I am confused here, you are going all the way to Aberdeen on business and you are going to drive?

wut?

You can fly there in sub 1:30, why on earth are you not flying that kind of distance? even the train takes forever to get all the way up there.

Thats what i suggested a few pages back.

Sorry mate, missed your post, i only scanned the thread quickly. Surely flying is...completely obvious? I dont even understand the train suggestions. Getting the train that far, or driving (lol), when domestic flights are so quick, painless, and easy, is an absurd way to get all the way up there.

In a month i'll be doing York - Pevensey in a 1.25 fiesta carrying 4 people plus luggage.

He's still a pussy.

Why do you have do keep calling me that?

I can guarantee you wouldnt do it in real life, so why do it here?

Its not my fault you can only afford a crap car and had to use a crap van for your epic road trip, get a better job then you can afford nicer things, its not my fault you are a peasant.

No i could suffer the train if i couldnt get a flight, get a bit of work done on the way or whatever, but driving on a saturday in this weather, not for me, its not even as if its a scenic drive.

At least the OP lives in north London, so he hasnt got to battle through it or round the M25 before he gets started :)

Aberdeen is as far from London as Stuttgart is, just having looked at a route planner.

lol :p Yeah, train would be a very distant second best for me if for whatever reason i couldnt find a flight from either heathrow, stanstead, or luton.

That's sort of like saying "In a month I'm going to repeatedly hit my Testicles with a Ball peen hammer"

Doing stupid things isn't something to brag amount.

I did Newcastle to Wembley and back in an S reg Mk.4 Fez 1.3 last June, this June, I did it in a 07 Mk.2 Focus ST 2.5T, lol, What a difference it made, lol. But the journey in the fiesta was no hardship really, it was alright.

A long distance London to Scotland train is rather different to a local bus in the Netherlands.

I have a comfortable, climate controlled executive saloon with full leather interior parked outside yet sometimes I'll favour public transport over it for certain longer distance journeys as it is cheaper and nicer when booked in advance (Week before last Plymouth to London and Return, First Class, £45. Fuel for 420 mile round trip = £70, parking = £30).

You cant blanketly bland all public transport as 'cattle transport'.
You are lucky PT is cheaper at all than going by car.

My experience with PT is that it is cattle transport, nearly all day long...

Do you have a lot of experience with the east coast main line?

Regardless how quiet it may be, it doesn't change the fact that it is public and there are other people, you have to get to and from a station using other methods, and that you have no control over the vehicle.

Point is, its really not that bad. Our trains are packed during commuter times, but it wont be on the way up there, and he will have a reserved seat anyway.

It doesnt mean its any less of a crap idea though, technology has given us flying buses which can do 500mph or more, designed for covering large distances easily and quickly. He should take advantage of these things.

You might need to try and get used to meeting the public as you progress through life :)

We have some clients around the Edinburgh area, not even once has it even occurred to me to not simply drive the 30mins from my house to LHR and fly there in around an hour, i can be there for 9am easily. Domestic flight, you barely even have to queue at the airport, and LHR short stay is around 5mins walk from the checkin area?

Assuming we take the Micra factor out and just look at public transport...

The thing is you can't fly there in that amount of time. You've got to get to the airport which either involves :
1) Public Transport
2) Expensive Car Parking
3) Taxi
4) Someone else going out of their way and usually getting out of bed far earlier than is polite to drop you off

Then check in way before the flight leaves, run the gauntlet of security assuming you are Ahmed the Dead Terrorist, then go through the whole transport issue again at the other end.

Rinse and repeat to get back home. If it takes less than 5 hours each way and you don't have a splitting headache you'll be doing well.

Flights are fine for international travel across water, otherwise I'd always take the train in preference.

Do you not take many internal flights? I fly to scotland semi-regularly from heathrow, the whole ordeal is very painless and easy. You have to be at the airport 1 hour before the flight, but in reality can just run almost straight on as long as the gate is still open.

The carpark (at least at heathrow) is literally 5mins walk to the checkin desk, it really is very easy. You then pick up a taxi the other end or pick up a pre arranged car.

Done it loads of times, i can be at Edinburgh for 9am having arrived at heathrow at around 6-7am or so. Its easy.

I get there half our before with BMI as long as you have hand luggage only.

Its painless.

Always use BMI myself, indeed. Nothing to it. Flying internally is nothing like the transatlantic experience you get with your family with 500 bags :p

Yep, used to do Glasgow to London, although that was a few years ago in a previous job. Trying to get into Camden from either Heathrow or Luton took as long as the flight from Scotland.

Best option was the overnight sleeper. Nice kip, breakfast and it arrived in Euston for a brisk 10 minute walk to the office.

Rent a Mondeo? - if you're rich then so be it.

Lol ...'rich' people don't 'rent' Mondeos! ...they have far better cars at their disposal by virtue of being 'rich'. And if you are really rich, just use the Gulf Stream.

I'd just take an internal flight for going that distance though myself, quick, painless and easy.
