295GTX SLI vs 480GTX SLI

Its not worth spending £1000 ~ on two Fermi cards when you could have a 5970 for £500 ~. Plus the new ATI cards will be with us shortly.

I think from looking around you will be looking at a minimum of 1200w on the psu to run a pair of 480s with overclocking, another chap on here with 2 470's was pulling 1kw at full load

i thought the 480 had a tdp of 250w. (x2 = 500w, add 200w for an oc cpu and a generous 150w for everything else = 850w)

plus a single 480 pulls morealess the same amount of power as a single 295 under load:

I swear to god Jigger your maths is utter rubbish, since when does 2 x £380 = £1000

How shortly are the new ATi cards coming, I didn't think they were out until Autumn at the earliest?

LOL you mean £390. Never seen them and they must be the 7 best priced GTX480'S IN THE WORLD. But they are still over priced.

The  will pass...

well my single 480 is fine on a 600w psu, the 480 is rated to what 300-350 ish, i wouldve thought youd be ok with 1kw, give it a go and you can then let us all know lol, as for gaming at that res my single 480 plays everything i have at a good 60 fps, but i must admit i dont have metro 2033 or bc2 which is what a lot of people are using as a benchmark nowadays.

Depends where you look, can be had for £381.26 elsewhere, even if you're looking just at OcUK prices I was only twenty quid out, a bit closer to the mark than your £220 miscalculation :p

To the OP my mate has 480 in SLi with an oc'd core i7 running fine on a Corsair 1000 watt psu.

I don't think you've anything to worry about concerning power tbh.

Your going to be close on the limit looking at your system.

List your full specs inc fans sound card and so on.

OK in terms of fans there is the large fan on the Skeleton plus 1 CPU fan and a hard drive fan, a DVD drive, 2XSATA drives, 1XSSD drive, no sound card. rest of the details are in the sig.

Thats it I think.

From what I have seen a GTX480 under full load can pull 330 watt so you need 660 watt on a single 12 rail or dual 330 watt rail available to the GPU's and your overclocked quad could pull 200 watt.

So that would leave you with 140 watt for,

RAM
DVD drive
HD drives x 2
SSD drive
Motherboard
Fans
Other bits USB items, FDD and so on.

You would be sailing close to the wind IMO.

No doubt about it the 480's consume an insane amount of power, below graph shows 480 at stock in SLI being maxed out, now add a highly overclocked i7 and the rest of the system then 1000 watts is not really playing it safe more so if you want to overclock the cards.

I see 295 SLI power rating is not on that graph, which would have been interesting from my point of view. I thought the Coolermaster M1000 would have done me for ages when I got it.

So it looks like I should either grit my teeth and get a higher rated PSU as well as the cards or wait and see if a new contender is released that consumes less power. :(

Well, in a moment of madness I decided to get the GTX 480s and I can say that they are so far running absolutely fine in my system. I've run various games and maxed out all the settings in all of them (apart from crysis of course) and the performance is amazing.

I'll report back here if I hit any problems.

I don't play 3Dmark. But seeing as you asked:

Yea, probably a few k lower than heavily OC'd TF setups, but then again when has Vantage reflected realworld performance? I was just pointing out that your claims as to what your setup could do in comparison to 480 SLI setups was a bit disingenuous.

So you play crysis benchmark then lol. There was a review that showed nvidia being much weaker in game with there average fps when comparing to there benchamark results. That 1 review basically showed that benchmarks mean little when actually using fraps to play through the game as the gtx480/470 were not nearly as strong when comparing there fraps results in game compared with there high benchmarks results.

No, but I play Crysis the game (which just happens to have a benchmarking ability). Anyway, benchmarks eh, a bit like statistics, you can make them show anything you want. :)
