Just about to order 4 x Kumho KU31

I was going to start a thread on this nearer the time but I suppose this thread will do. How many of you actually bother with putting winter tyres on, in winter? Do you keep a spare set of rims or do you go to the trouble of getting someone to swap them over, if so between which months? Is this mainly a RWD only thing?

I am likely to be putting Contisport 2 run flats on mine in the near future, are these going to be seriously rubbish in winter?

Surely if they have a set of rims only used in the winter they would be better off fitting winter tyres to them!? Not people I'd be taking tyre advice from personally, seems a huge missed opportunity picking a summer tyre for winter only use

Well you don't drive a VX so I would take the views of those who do drive them and have tried a variety of tires over yours ;)

KU31 seem fairly good price, but I'm leaning towards some AD08s next on mine, look very very good according to the last Evo review in some of the more important tests to me, but most importantly get some good write ups from other Teg owners who are more track and fast road orientated.

A lot of it is down to the car and how they work in the whole system, not just on 1/2 cars in a review. A good spread of well reasoned opinions, experiences and self experiences are the best way to go about tyre selection :)

90% of the time in this country you do not need winter tyres despite what the hype says. Even in the middle of winter it's usually above the 6-7c mark during the day where winter tyres begin to be useful and certainly above the 1c mark where winter tyres start to make a proper difference.

Every so often we have freak weather conditions such as last winter where you would have been better off with winter tyres.

However with the climate we have unless you have money to burn I dont think its worth going to the effort of having two sets of wheels and tyres just for the winter tyre thing.

However if like some you've got a set of nice wheels for summer and normal wheels for winter then why not have winter tyres on the winter wheels.

As for CS2 runflats - why? CS3 replaced CS2 some time ago and runflats are evil.

What about all the sunny dry days in between, the weather isn't only 37 degree peak summer heat or hammering it down with rain/snow :D

CS2 because the places I've looked don't appear to have CS3 in run flat form. And I want to get a set on run flats for the time being so as not to fall foul of the BMW warranty and breakdown cover which has two years to run. After that I will almost certainly go for non run flats.

The poorer weather kicks in much sooner than the winter months. I wouldn't want to run 888's in anything but summer and dry weather and I wouldn't be driving my car in the snow anyway. Have you considered certain tyres may suit different cars? The VX220 likes to have a relatively low tyre pressure 24F/26R and stiff sidewalls which work well on the Kumho's.

I'm not saying the OP should get the Kumho's. I'm saying different cars like different tyres.

I've got KU31s on my 182, no comlaints from me but driving hard enough to run out of grip is pretty rare any way I find. I was happy to save a few quid and have no noticable performance issues.

205/45/16 or 195/45/16?

I bought a car from a BMW main dealer with full warranty which didn't have RFT's on the front when it was supposed to, so I doubt they are that bothered.

Did manage to use it to blag a free mobility pack out of them mind.

We've switched the Golf from Eagles to KU31s recently. The performance difference in the dry seems to be minimal.
In the wet the Eagles are noticeably better, but it's not exactly night and day. Considering they cost 40% less than the Eagle, they don't feel like a 40% worse tyre.

I'll be interested to see how they wear compared to the Eagles, which did not last long at all on the Golf and is the main reason Kate has decided to try something else.

All summer tyres are seriously rubbish in winter.
If you're worried, get a set of decent winter tyres.

Depending on your mileage, etc, they could last for over 2 winters so it's worth considering.

I'll be looking for some part-worn winter tyres closer to the time to keep in the garage. I won't be putting them on a second set of wheels though, I'd just get them changed if we had a predicted cold spell or snow.

I cant really fault the Ku31 but the only other tyres i had on the car for comparison were uniroyal rainsports.

my kumhos (and not far from the legal limit) were stonking in the snow compared to the F1s i had on the S4
But still **** compared to winter tyres.

Given the right snow, conditions and tyres you can drive on it as if it were tarmac.
And perhaps 4wd :p

I've fitted 4 to my Integra about a month ago in 195 50 15. Coming form 888s, i find them pretty bad really. In fact i seem to remember my old Bridgestone re720s being better, by better I mean in outright levels of dry grip and in feel on the road, the ku31s being quite squirmish even after a bit of pressure experimentation.

I'll be the first to admit, they were chosen after reading numerous people from the Integra forum sung their praises, and the prices of 888s jumping circa £50 per corner seemingly overnight.

I shan't be betting an eyelid at the price of another set of cut slicks or reputable tyres next time, probably give Yokohama AD08s a go.

Ohh and they aren't half loud when you start pushing them!
