Passat 03 1.9TDI 130

they are basically the same engine apart form
turbo(VA Vs. VB)
intercooler(SMIC Vs. FMIC)
mapping in the ECU

a Pd130 could do 185+ but your clutch wont last long

Brother in law had his company car 1.9tdi chopped in at over 200k miles and still running strong. They all got replaced with the new model when they came out 2.0tdi.

Cannot fault them for a A-B car. Won't set your pants on fire but good at the job they were intended for :)

I know a couple of people with Fabias that have remapped to over 170bhp with no issues. 185bhp sounds like it's stretching it but I'm sure a lot of people have done it.

iaind, manufacturers don't make engines and map them to the max power they can output, it's usually limited by the marketing department and/or emissions issues. Prime example is the new 200PS 2.0T in the Mondeo/S-Max, there will be a 237PS version. Same engine, different map. Change the intercooler and you have the 250-260PS engine that will be in the next Focus ST. As said above, there are also HUGE tolerances in play also.

Why do peolpe just post 185 then LOL? Put some substance with it! Im asking for opinions and help as im new to the TDI!

Anyway i have 0 idea if its true, i just went by the reviews of the remap on this site...

5th one up from bottom..

http://celtictuning.co.uk/vw.aspx

A mate recomended them, id be happy with any improvment not that i dont like it as it is but more is always better, long as it dont trash other parts as you guys mentioned.

I went into exact reasons for thinking it's a bad idea

Yea you did further down the posts.. Apologies Knee jerk reaction! ;)

I have called up the Celtic place and they confirm its 100% within the egine saftey paramaters..

Is it still a bad idea??

If 130bhp isnt enough for you, then just buy a more powerful one in the first place..surely?

I know you've already bought it, but should you not have bought something that suits in the first place? It's a decent enough runabout, its never going to be a performance car, with 130 or 185bhp so I'd just leave it alone

Not really, the 2.5 V6 TDI is worthless, the 1.9TDI is better.

It is enough and i didnt even think about a remap untill sombody mentioned it, apparently the MPG will increase also.

The spirit of these forums is buying somthing of a lesser spec and running it at a higher spec (OC) which is fairly simmilar to what the remap is doing i guess.

A friend has the 150 with a supposed 200hp remap (yeah right!) but the punch given by when the turbo hits is without a doubt greater and when he takes it easy he can get mpg's in the low 60s on the motorway at 65mph, but that is instantaneous, not over a tank.

No it's not. The benefits of the 2.5 TDI over the 1.9TDI might be such that its hard to justify it, but it's certainly not the case that the 1.9TDI is a 'better' engine. The 2.5 TDI is smoother and more refined and slightly more powerful.

Perhaps i worded that incorrectly, the 1.9TDI is more fitting to the car.

The 2.5TDI (in this application) has the following wrong with it:

1) Makes the car even-more nose heavy

2) Notable drop in mpg with no real gain in performance

3) Accelerated wear of the front tyres

4) I believe the 2.5 unit is less reliable than the 1.9

Give that both units aren't really good examples of TDI engines, they both sound like trucks and they both sound loud at the traffic lights its hard to say the 2.5 is worth it over the 1.9.

I've driven several cars with the 2.5TDI unit, biggest was an A6 estate, even in a car this big i "prefered" the 1.9TDI.

I'd have to agree with Firestar.
Whilst the PD 1.9 isn't the most refined of engines, it is fundementally a very strong and reliable unit.

On the subject of power from these engines (I'm rusty on this info so until some wise sage arrives this'll have to do).
As I recall the pre-PD engines were exactly the same engine across the range with bhp mapped to the model. So the 90bhp bottom end tdi could be mapped upto the 125/130 (110bhp Fox edit) mark of this older engine with minimal hassle.

I think VW made a change around the time the PD engine was introduced which reduced the size of either the injectors or the fuel lines into the injectors to prevent everyone remapping so cheaply as after this change it obviously involved a few more parts than just the chip/tune.
You could tell the engine you wanted 130bhp but it just wouldn't be able to fuel it with the standard injector setup (if I'm right about the injector thing).

Someone with, better than my own, googlefu needs to confirm all that, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the right area.

Edit: Also I think 150bhp model was remapped by VW to 180bhp(?) in the golf anniversary edition of the diesel gti.

Further edit: I had a quick look through the faq on tdiclub.com and it has a nice bit about injector sizes
http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-6.html#b Definitely worth a read imho.

There was no 130bhp pre PD engine, the biggest was an astonishing 110bhp.

Nope, this was the 1.8T 150 which was 180bhp in Anniversary form.

Ah I knew it was something like that, cheers :)

Many moons ago I used to have an encyclopedic knowledge of cars and now I'm happy when I remember to brake for junctions
