Boat owners, where art thou !?

My parents have a 37ft Wharram Raka. They got it when I was about 4 so that's where I first learnt to sail, then played with most dinghies etc.

spent a season or two racing on a J24 which was a lot of fun and I have my RYA Day Skipper qualification.

Don't have any photos of the boat to hand but it's been out of the water for the last two years being refitted so it doesn't look like it used to any more anyway.

It's getting launched this time next year so I'll get some good photos of it then.

Fantastic:) Best in this thread! What is it?

She's a Southerly 32. We got her in early 2008. She was the first of that model to ever be put in the water. Northshore used her a show-boat at the Excel 2008 show and we took delivery of her just after that. Fun toy for the weekends :)

I think these forums are very good really, you just need to know the 'culture' so to speak.

Living in a council house with 20k debt is more likely to put you on the 'wrong' side of the Motors Forum culture divide if anything.

exactly

its just trolls, same as any other forum.

People like to think they are invisible when typing on a keyboard and type stuff they wouldnt otherwise say in real life just for a reaction.

I read these forums for years before joining and what you now have here are a lot of young adults that grew out of computers and into cars.

But they obviously came from reasonably well to do backgrounds to have been able to afford to have computers as a hobby way back when.

So i think a lot of the people here had a decent head start, hence the anti chav, anti council estate attitude that prevails.

Just my own observations of course.

I suspect that you are quite accurate in what you say there DiamondMark, although I would tend to say that it isn't so much of an anti 'council estate' attitude as an anti chav/*****/sub-class/scum attitude, it isn't fare to condemn council estates as a whole ...after all it's the people that live there that make them what they are ...unfortunately it doesn't take many sour grapes to make the whole bunch 'seem' bad.

I don't quite understand the "grew out of computers" bit though ...when is that supposed to happen then :p ? ...actually I suppose I have gotten out of the graphics card wars, I did some years back now ...but I still love computers I just prioritise slightly differently now.

Maybe grew out was not the right word :)

As for council estates thats where i started, on the worst south London had to offer.

You just have to get off your arse dont you.

Pfft whatever! You weren't doing it right, I imagine you were pottering about in some borefest topper or something;)

Sailing is the way to travel guys!!!

And these are the most awesome boats ever... For any naysayers who think sailing is dull!

Went out once with a couple of french blokes which was fun, we actually had some wind and the spinnaker out. Unfortunately most of the time it was just a borefest. I also don't like cold water, and sailing invariably ends with you in the water. Unlike powerboating where you almost end up smashing your face a variety of things when you end up flying 20 ft after heading up a wave too fast. :D

RIB's are good fun.

We have one as a company boat, off out on it tomorrow actually !

Being on the water is a fantastic feeling.

That a 4 meter RIB? Must go some with a 75 on the back. :p

Spent most of the time at uni in 4m RIBs with 50s on the back as well as a few times with a 5m with twin 75s, now that was fun. However that water is way too calm, get some swell and waves under to have the real fun.:p

Can you just buy a boat and go for a sail or do you need a license and that kind of boring stuff? It would be awesome on a sunny day.

You'll want to go on a couple of courses as mentioned. Something like a dayskipper or at least level 2 powerboat (if getting a RIB or something). You'll also want a VHF licence so you can use a radio at sea (if you're not just in a Dinghy).

Im not sure of the exact model but this one looks identical to the one my parents own.

I've only been on it once, really should get on it more in this weather.

Went halves with a mate earlier this month on a MY2000 19ft Fletcher boat. I hardly know anything about boats but its got a 125 outboard, it goes very fast and is lots of fun. Off fishing this weekend, hopefully catch some hammour or maybe a barracuda :).

Long time RIB enthusiast turned yob of the sea having just bought a Sea Doo GTX at the weekend.

Thinking of getting a Cobra are you Damien. ?

No, I am happy with the Valiant for the time being.

I am a marine engineer by trade, so I get to play about on hundreds of boats in a year, that Cobra just being one of them.

I miss read your initial post, read it as you were trying out a RIB to decide whether to buy or not :o

When our last boat (Sunseeker Mustang) was on its last legs and needed more work doing than could be justified, I sold it to an engineer from the boat yard for a song and he spent his winter doing it up for his family. He spent his time rather than much money and it's in better order than could ever have been justified. he has a nice little boat now and it's been great seeing him and his kids out on it after it served us very well for almost 20 years! My god that was a good boat when it was young - 350 in a 21 foot boat. 60 plus was no problem
