Educate the uneducated. Turbo'ing an NA car.

It's a shame you didn't start off with something good and the modify that so it was unrecognisable performance wise to its manufacturers spec!

Talking about educating the uneducated - do you know just how quick the original Maestro Turbo was in it's time? Quicker standing 1/4 than both the E30 M3 and the RS500 Cosworth, and 0.1 second slower than a 16v Delta Integrale.

The original Maestro Turbo is nothing like what MG Rover turned their cars that are being discussed being turbo'd in this thread.

Only it wasn't really. All the press demonstrators had the boost turned up so they were running within an inch of their lives.

OMGZ AN MG!!!1!!!!111one

OcUK brigade kicking in again, what a surprise :p

If they were bad cars, very small numbers would have sold. Period. In the 5 years the MG 'Z' cars were about, if they had been THAT bad no-one at all would have bought one, however they did sell, and at some points very well.

The ZR is badly built, falls apart if you breathe on it the wrong way, but is a cheaper car and 'fun' to drive, sometimes.
The ZS is slightly better built, still not brilliant, but was deemed 'the best FWD I have ever driven' by one of motoring's legends when it was reviewed.
The ZT is a massive boat of a car that was somehow made to handle well, god only knows how, but they did it. I preferred the ZT190 I drove to a 56 plate Mondeo, but got declined for the finance.

Seriously, consider your facts before spouting poop about on the Internet.

Oh and you'll need to uprate the gearbox bearings! The standard differential bearings in a ZS180 box wouldn't really be a massive fan of booooost y0 :p

I was going from the manufacturers published performance figures. The car magazines managed to improve on them making the performance difference even greater for those cars (whether or not the boost was increased).

I'd go for a complete engine swap rather than forced induction on a NA engine.
There are generaly plenty of similar sized turbo lumps that can be transplanted for a lot less than modifying a NA lump.

As soon as I have the cash the Manta is being treated to a 2.3 HOT saab engine, cheap as chips to pick up a complete running car, bolts up to various Gm rwd gearboxes, 250bhp as standard.
Steel crank, rods etc as standard means with a simple remap it will do 330bhp, bigger turbo and injectors will see 400bhp all day every day.
You can pick up running cars with fsh for £1500, with a beefed up rear axle I reckon I can have a reliable 350bhp rwd 70's classic for circa 3k on the road on top of purchase price.
Not bad in a car that weighs in at 900kg.

Been reading PPC?

I stopped buying it but last I read they were part way to having one of those in a mk2 escort and had done the easy bit!

Aye had a sub to ppc, did some of my own research into the subject after they seemed to get bored of it.
As i'm running a tuned c20xe lump in the manta atm, i've not got many cost effective solutions for big power without spending big bucks.
The Saab turbo lump is a cheap way to big power (as they're not too popular in this country)
I'll need to fit a new rear axle (the gte unit wont take the torque) apparently the jag axle can be modified to fit for a reasnoble price, and can be fitted with a factory standard LSD,either that or the volvo 240 axle has a reptation for taking high bhp and torque before failure.
I can fabricate and install a full cage myself which will stiffen the car up and help it handle the power better than standard.
Other than that it's a chop job on the inner rear arches to accommodate wider boots on the back, and a brake upgrade to slow the whole lot down :)

It wasn't very impressive when you think they were scraping 150bhp from a 2.0l turbo when at the same time Honda were making 150bhp 1.6 N/A Civics. :D

They didn't "scrape" 150bhp from it, 150bhp from a turbocharged 2.0L engine is a very low state of tune, even for an 8v engine. The engine is quite capable of producing substantially more power, but I suspect there would have been longevity issues with the drive train (and probably some evil torque steer). It was still quicker than a Civic VTi though...

I doubt it, they are about the same weight. Some sites report the 0-60 of the Maestro as 6.7 seconds but I doubt it, not with only 150 bhp and weight of about 1 ton. All over the internet it reports the EK9 0-60 as 5.7 when I know for a fact it will be more like 6.2 at best. Don't always believe what you read.
