*** Steam Summer Sale - Selection of games upto 85% off ***

Really? So it's a con that I can have all these games accessible through an easily managed and self updating window. It's a con that I don't need to store 120 odd boxes and their respective disks, and go searching for the specific disk when I want to play an old title? It's a con that Steam reminds me these games exist, and offer them to me at a decent discount?

It's a decent discount from an outrageous price in the first place. They are giving you a discount on a sale price that is 600% overpriced.

Maybe I'm fickle, but if I get an urge to play a game, the fact the disk is in a box in the loft means it's very unlikely I'm going to bother.

Steam is ALL about ease of use, it does the boring bits for you - and for that I'm willing to pay the extra 10p ;) (Not that I did, I got bored of Thief quickly 6 years ago, heresy I know).

And people should learn what the word 'con' means. No one's forcing you into buying anything from Steam, ever.

It's a con because it cons people into thinking they're getting a great deal, when actually they are paying the retail price.

Steam can be a great system, but 90% of the games I've seen in this deal - even though some can be bought for good prices - many are now available on steam with these discounts for the retail price you'd find it elsewhere because the original pricing on steam is 5, 10 even 15 pounds over what it can be bought for somewhere else.

You can argue about your ease of use bla bla bla. but most boxed games don't require the disc to be inserted to play, so if it bothers you that much on the few games that do require it to be inserted just crack the game once you've bought it.

*Not to mention the fact that steam versions reduce the mod potential you have.

I bought the witcher myself when it was on offer earlier in the sale, because the retail version is 15 quid, whilst the steam offer had it at 5. Great deal tbh.

However, Flatout Ultimate Carnage was on something like a 90% offer, from some ridiculous price like 20 quid, when it can be had elsewhere for a mere 5. At 1.70 it's still a good deal, but to sell it at a ridiculous price in the first place and slap a 90% discount tag on it is just dodgy.

You really need to take a look at actual sale prices before you let the discounts on steam wow you, because the original price on steam is often dire.

Some of these deals are absoloutley laughable. Thief deadly shadows, supposedly 85% off from 14 quid at 2.09, when it's on play for the price it should be anyway for a 6 year old game for 1.99.

Reading up, some of you have just bought thief when you could have bought it for probably the last 12 months at a cheaper price.

Welcome to the great Steam con, massively overprice games so you can stick a large percentage discount sign next to them and they end up being the same price as they should actually retail for.

Um, just because a game is 6 years old doesn't mean it should be £1.99! Also, youre forgetting the price isn't the only reason people buy off steam. I'm a uni student who travels back and forth a lot, so I don't have all my games with me when I'm up at uni. Steam just means I can play any game any time :) I can also just press 'Install' and leave it rather than having to get the disc out of the loft which was gathering dust (which is what it would be if it was on disc...)

You're anti-steam for no reason. Yeah some steam games are too expensive but I can't see many other retailers doing similar discounts like Steam are. Steam = positive for PC gaming! I think you need to learn a bit how marketing works... find a company that doesn't make use of RRPs...

Find me a place where I can buy all the CoHs, Metro, Red Factions, Stalkers, Saints Row, Titans and Warhammers for £26....

Im happy to pay the full prices on steam for there download and back up system, never mind the sale price. Ive spent 1000s on games over the years and have nothing to show for it. Since I started using steam however many years ago Ive actualy built up a good collection which is always installed and used, worth every penny.

A bit more on topic, I wouldnt mind tropica but I think Ive spent enough now :(

And to top it all off I can't actually see Thief 3 anywhere on play for £1.99

It's Thief Deadly Shadows -not Thief 3

I'm not anti-steam at all. I use it every day and I buy a lot off it, and I've already said that it has a lot of great offers - like the THQ pack you mentioned. But through-out the thread it's apparent a lot of people think these are great offers, when infact the majority are simply just the price it should be, and it is in every other shop.

The result being people buying games they wouldn't have otherwise bought simply because they think they are getting a great deal.

I agree with you. Steam is overrated drm and shop in one.
Would you like to see my 56k bill from 2004 just to play HL2?

I want the industry to stick to discs and not cause me and others (I presume) inconvenience.
And also some of the prices on steam are way off. HL for more than £1????? er look its the year 2010, they should be lucky to get 25p for it.

Mirrors edge was a good price though.

My Game shop always smells faintly of Cabbage.

Strangely its *well known orange coloured game-shop* that smelt weird/whiffy in my area and *well known purple coloured game-shop*smells clean lol.

ps it's great how we have false competition in my area. Two shops of the same ownership in the same vicinity.

Can you please show me where it's that price on play? All I see is prices from £1.99 meaning second hand or at least a third party seller.

Man we need a shipment of cheese to go with all the whine in this thread suddenly.

Thief 3, i'm having that. Could never turn down a thief game for £2.

Gzero, just shut the hell up. Ever checked the ID Superpack contents? All the old games listed for £6 each and in the bundle, £19 for all the old classics released over 10 years ago. Now please find me those on Amazon for less.

Your whole argument is based entirely on price. My whole argument is based on convenience at a *decent* price.

If anyone actually bought Flatout at £20 or thought that the %age discount was relevant, well, they're likely an idiot as you rightly point out.
Most don't however, and see the price as a price, judge that vs the ease of use of Steam, and buy it for £1.70 because why not, it's about the price of a half of lager.

Some deals are great, some are poo, some are great to one person and poo to another. But to say a blanket 'it's a con!' is just wrong, it's perfecty clear what you're getting and for what end price, that is not a deliberate attempt to deceive you, nor to trick you.

Anyway, I'll shut up now ;)

Am I the only one that checks the Steam sales hoping that there AREN'T many great deals so I don't get suckered into buying stuff? :D
