So my time has come, I finally have a job, So in September time to coincide with FF14, Ill be taking the plunge with a new tower.

Just really looking for not, But advice is welcome, Just basically wondering how much of a machine could be gotten for roughly £500ish, that would be a decent upgrade from what I have now.

Currently im on some Dell prebuilt, which is apparently,

Intel Core 2 6600 @2.4Ghz
2GB of like 500Mhz RAM.
512MB 9600GT.

Currently on 1280x1024, But will probably be going full on with a new screen shortly, 1920x1080.

So even though im not buying now, Just looking at what could be done now for that price range, Not including an OS, Or Peripherals.

Any specs advise would be greatly appreciated.

at 1920X1080 a 5770 will be no good, even this 5830 will need some ingame settings turned down

Thanks, and I dont mind turning settings down, Ive been pretty used to playing on Medium and Low for the past few years! :P

God damn man, you're in the stone ages :D

Lol, not exactly - the Q6600 is great chip, but obviosly the Dell system isn't allowing him to make the most use out of it.

With a £500 budget, one option is to keep the CPU and buy a nice new s775 board, 4GB of DDR2 RAM and overclock the CPU to the max (aim for 3.6GHz if using a G0 stepping). However this would mean investing in old tech, but if you are mainly gaming you would be OK.

Alternatively, the Q6600 and DDR2 RAM sells well on the second-hand market. You could most likely get £100 for the CPU and RAM and the 9600GT would net you at least £20. Therefore, that would add ~£120 to your budget - and £620 will get you a rather nice modern system if you don't need to include OS or peripherals in this budget.

As for specific components - its not easy to pin down exactly what you should get three months ahead of time. However, this is what I would suggest going for now.

Just to clarify, Its not a "Q"6600...Its an old Duel Core :P

and sorry, Not sure of the exact specs, its all hidden under Dell stupidness, The ony thing I know for certain is the 9600GT's brand, Peak, Yes, It may be mine but ive not heard of them either.

yurg, its a dull!!!(spelling is correct) sell what you can

Bit of an old bump here, But ill be ordering something or toher within the week, so just looking for abit more help.

My Budget is £589, and I really cannot go over that.

Ive now got a Benq G2420HDBL, 1920x1080 screen, and have a copy of Windows 7 at the ready, So im basically after a the base tower, so any new reccomendations are welcome.

Ps. The only way the budget can go up at all is if im able to find someone to buy this PC, or if I give up and trade it in, in that ncie red shop, If your curious ive got a thread in the price check forum somewhere.

For the sake of an extra 20 quid I'd go with the 955 build spec'd above. Looks great for the money. If you really can't stretch your budget though, I'd buy the same 955 spec apart from the gfx and look for a second hand 4870 or 4890. In fact I've seen them brand new on the bay for £99 and perform similar to the 5770 if not better. There's just no dx11, but that shouldn't matter too much for a build to that budget :)

Ok then, some prices have changed so this is good, This is basically the same build as above but with a 460.

Only things im not sure on is if that PSU will be enough, and that Motherboard, there are only 2 reviews on the site for it, One not so good, and both claim having odd problems, so im not 100%.

Should be plenty. 600W is most likely overkill. Although if you want better cable management pick that one you linked as its modular.

Well Ive swapped in the modular one and purchased this morning, Most of it comes tomorrow, some bits wednesday as I saved a few quid.

Ill have to pop some pictures up of my inevitably messy cables in the pc on wednesday!

Looks good. You have however bought a proper xfire mobo but gone with nvidia gfx. I guess if you want to upgrade the gfx again later and use xfire it made sense to do so.

Also the 955 cpu can be made into a 965 by upping the multiplier by 1. As you are using the stock heatsink id start off as a 955, check the temps then up it to a 965 and compare temps to see if the heatsink can hack it.

Good luck with the build, hope no gremlins come in the box
