Promotion with no extra dosh? Accept?

Simple one this time:

You get offered a better, but harder job - higher on the slippery corporate 'ladder', but no extra money.

The boss says 'if you say no, I'll just get some other guy - no probs - up to you'. He is not interested in pay reviews in 6 months or 1 year, in seeing how it goes then discussing what you're worth, anything. But it'd make your CV look nicer, full stop.

What are you going to do?
 
Take it. Do really well with it. Get the experience. Move on to a better place, better boss, better job.
 
Depends on if you actually would like the role and want to advance in the company. If you don't care and don't see yourself working there indefinitely, I wouldn't.
 
I'd do as the others say and take it, stick with it for 6 months or so then find a new job if they haven't increased your pay - assuming the promotion means you aren't working a lot of extra hours.

Taking the better job/position now should hopefully improve your job prospects in the future, even if it doesn't pay any better right now.
 
Depends, do I currently actually work as much as I should to get paid what I do?

If not, and I have much idle time, take the promotion for no extra cash, as I would then actually be earning based on my input and it will bolster my cv.

If I am already working to the level that warrants my current pay, then no, sod it, I'm not taking on more work and responsibilities just for something that might have an influencing factor on my cv.
 
Sometimes you have to take one for the team, take it, no ones getting pay increases at the moment, be grateful they can see a future in you and are offering you something more
 
It would depend on the exposure level of the role and the ability to use it to lever yourself into an alternative position or a future pay rise.

If it enabled easier networking with higher management/executive level staff, or put you in a better position to move closer to where you wanted to be, then taking it makes sense...
 
Take it, easy...
Work for 6 months, if no increase in pay, go looking for a better job ( don't quit until you've found it).

Re-read the OPs post, they aren't offering him anything more except more workload and responsibility. This is not a good reason to "take one for the team" - his boss has even made it clear he can't expect his pay to even be reviewed any time in the next 12 months. His boss is treating him like a mug and if he takes this so called "promotion" without any tangible benefit to himself - that's exactly what he will be.
 
It would depend on a variety of factors including whether you think you have the capacity to do this job and do it in a positive way, is it going to negatively impact on your life in any way (e.g. longer hours, more pressure than you can handle etc), whether this role is liable to give you transferrable skills/experience that might appeal to another company, whether it is more interesting than what you are currently doing, if you're likely to get noticed and/or a further paid promotion on the back of it.
 
Years ago, if I had been asked that I would have told them no.

Know, yes certainly I would jump at the chance to better myself in any job. It will benefit yourself, even if there is no extra money. Someone will notice how well your doing.

more work load? well you are supposed to work while at work, I'd rather be very busy than do nothing...

if they expect overtime for nothign thats a different matter...
 
If it's going to offer me personal/professional development, and more exposure to the senior management team then you've got nothing to lose. So what if it's harder? Challenge yourself. :)

The regional role I've now undertaken actually had me seeing a slight pay cut from my ops manager role, however, the exposure I've had to the exec and positive feedback from the exec has been worth it's weight in gold. I'm due a salary review in the next few months (6 month probationary) which should lead me to between 5-10% increase which would pretty much get me back onto my previous salary.

Even without that latter bit, I don't want to get stuck in teh same position too long, if I can improve the company and my own skills - I'd go for it.
 
If you say no it will close the door for you in the future as you are showing you don't want to progress and no interest in the company.

Yes, and if you still dont get more money then look for another job.
