The Times becomes a subscription website

Why do we need these massive news corps anyway? They don't make the news, they merely report on it!

I foresee I will get my news from blogs, random websites, YouTube, facebook etc etc over the next decade.

With the internet we simply don't need the old and tired newspaper companies.

You don't get any decent quality investigative journalism from sources like that. Most of the time its just ripped from the "real" media.

I'll go to the BNP and EDL website if I want to read what The Times have to say.

Relatively few people care about such matters, and just want to see the basic facts. I am personally not interested in reading the back story to the recent shootings or some complex political story.

So, to you, a reasonable report on the economic crisis affecting Greece would be,

"Greece spent a bit too much, Germany's helping them out"

?

You literally want to know ~something~ happened, but not how or why?

Tbh I couldn't care less about the Greek economy. :p However the basic level of required information would be available from the aforementioned sources.

Don't really use The Times. I have a Google Reader Feed set up which updates to let me know when a new story is reported on the BBC News site, Reuters, CNN, Wired News as well as a few other sites.

Get a ton on content in one place for free.

Meh, there are plenty of other places to go for the news. I will miss some of the comment pieces though.

Well its happened today, £1 for 24 hours or £1 for 30 days followed by a £2 per week subscription.

Has anyone coughed up?

I would never pay for news.. its like, its on our tv (well yes you pay for that but you know what I mean)

And there's plenty of other websites which have the same news for free...

Didn't some US publication go paid too?

I hope it dies a death, before more go that way.
