GTX 480 power and heat, really that bad?

ive got a 480 & it was both hot & noisy, tis under water now so problems solved. can't do anything about it sucking down the juice tho. :p

My last post seems to have been deleted not sure why but whatever anyone thinking of spending this kind of money on a gfx card i assume would be doing some research looking at benchies and so on so no we don't have to counter it on here research will do that for us :). As i said it is personal as to whether a person feels the extra heat and power usage is worth it for an extra 10% performance not looked at prices for a while so no idea how the 480 and 5870 compare on that score but last i looked it was quite a difference.

can't speak for the 480 but my 470 is fine heat and noise wise and is also a better buy than the 480

must say I'm thinking about cancelling the order for my 470 WC block, don't think it will make that much difference

Bought my ocuk 480 about 3 weeks ago and im happy with it, it idles at about 65 deg with the fan at 44% and i cant hear it at all ,and when gaming its about 85 deg and the fan at about 66% and i still cant hear it because when im gaming i have the game volume right up as most poeple do when gaming

re:

All the talk on forums and reviews sites are so exaggerated, they do not run as hot as ppl make out and if you have a decent case with cooling you have nothing to worry about like all video cards and cases

No problem with noise, no problem with heat.

Idle temp is around 40c, in-game playing BFBC2 reaches around 85c, fan set to auto.

Been amazing for me during some of the hottest days I have known in years.

Have no idea why others are having heat / noise issues

I have got a coolermaster case with plenty of fans that helps;)
Just need to make sure you system is pretty well cooled as you would expect from any high performance system

Cheers
mrix

My system is in the sig, idles around 60 degrees and has hit a maximum of 92 when gaming. I only notice the fan noise if I'm listening for it.

If two cards offered identical performance, getting one that costs more to run(I dunno, if on 24/7, what £10-20 a year, its barely anything and hardly worth considering but its still there), will pump out more heat into a hot room(for me a massive massive issue due to my god awful room in summer) which won't be a problem for most people, and it costs more.

Summer makes me wish I had a 40nm GPU!! :/
4870 isn't even that bad, but bet it doesn't help ¬_¬

And for the thread, how many people game with no sound on at all (eg, how the websites benchmark the fans)? Remember even small desktop speakers are going to cover up a decent amount of fan noise. When playing Crysis recently at fairly high volume (when nobody's around :P) I can cope with having my GPU fan on 80-90%, which is very bloody loud! Add into that the GPU fan blending with your other case fans too and it's barely as loud as the website tests!

Well, without giving too much away, the gtx 480 Iv found is only £40 more expensive than a standard 5870.... this makes it worth it right?

As for water cooling, never done it before, and not looking to spend any more money.

My main question I guess is, is the 5870 enough for gaming these days at 1920x1200 resolution and is it future proof?

What about the noise generated from the 5870? Comparable to the 480?

Also my motherboard is an x48 crossfire edition motherboard. It will be ok, to put a single gtx 480 in the main pcix slot right???

What do you reckon 5870 at £330 or gtx 480 at £370.....

Or wait for the 6000 ati refresh..... Iv waited this long dont mind wating longer.

Just getting the urge to buy as Iv found a cheaper 480!

I know however that Id feel a little bit guilty if I did sepend over £300 on a graphics card, becuase these things really only have about 2 years if game life in them (I mean in two years your high end card wont be able to max out settings on newer games) plus, by 2012 new Windows operating, most likly dx12 and then your dx11 montser card, starts looking a bit sheepish......

I game at 1900x1200, 5850 would do a good job?? What about future proofing?

The 5870 has been on my mind since release, but, I have found a gtx 480 for only 40 more than the 5870, so it would be conservative coice 5850 or all out attack gtx 480....

Money is not the problem..... doesnt mean, I wouldnt feel bad, splashing unwisely etc.

I leave my fan speeds at 60% (Not that noisy) when idle and have idle temps of around 45 degrees. I then crank the fan up to 80% when playing games and have temps of around 60 to 70 degrees. If I leave the fan on auto I would reach temps into the 90s.

There is a rumer of a 485 in the works yes....

But Im not looking to buy at their regular prices!!!! Iv found somewhere a gtx 480 at only 40 more than a 5870, so it got methinking.

Isn't there a optimized refreash out soon, without the cache ?

Should run loads cooler, and scale better for smaller sizes.

I doubt it will be a refreshed (reworked) core, I think would be built from bad cores with the memory disabled to make them functional.

I think the GTX485 is the originally planed 512 core version of Fermi that would run hotter and only be availble in very limited number. I seem to remember Nvidia said they would need 18-24 months to have enough cards to launch the 512 sp GTX485.

So you reckon, we wont see anything new from NVIDIA for up to a year?

It depends on what you mean by see. They could paper launch now, but a hard launch for a 512sp Fermi core is unlikely to happen full stop IMO.

One thing that cheeses me off, is when you buy something, to find out had you waited 2-3 months, something better for the same money would have been available.

Thats why I dont know if I should get any new card now, or wait for he ATI 6000 series...

There's always something better in the pipeline m8. Any of the top end cards available now will still play games fine. If you're happy to wait then fair enough but don't forget, when the new tech comes out it'll cost top dollar. Wait too long and you'd never buy anything. My card still cuts through most things I play, well virtually all titles in fact.

They cant charge more than £330 for the 6870 when it gets release.......
