do you think its ok for an 8 year old to have there own mobile phone ?

There's absolutely no reason on Earth that an EIGHT year old child needs a mobile telephone. As for Facebook accounts...sweet Jesus. Let the kid be a kid for Christ's sake!

No, what could they possibly be doing that would require you to be in constant contact with them? Take them away and tell your sister to consult you in future.

Mobile phones are something I would see as a parental issue up till a fairly high age. The ability to talk to whomever in a completely unmonitored and private environment is something a parent decides.

By giving a child (even ignoring the fact they are only 8) put unfair pressure on the parents to let them keep the phone.

I'd only give them a phone when they reach secondary school, under the condition that you are allowed to check their phones now and again. Well that's what I do with my lad, and it's worked out fine so far.

What the? Checking your child's phone who goes to SECONDARY school?

I'm not questioning you personally, i'm just saying this generally..

Do you really think that's going to accomplish anything? They know that you check their phone, if they want to do something bad/wrong they will clear their tracks.

And the worst thing is, if they aren't doing anything bad, it makes them feel distrusted. It's just a pointless thing to do with no possible positive outcome.

Completely disagree with this. Checking a phone is a over the top.

You are in the dog house? Seriously?

Your sister in law has completely overstepped the mark here. These are your kids and are your responsibility. If something goes wrong the buck stops with you!

Children under 13 are not permitted to have facebook accounts. There are very good reasons for that.
There are plenty of good reasons for not allowing an 8 year old to have a mobile phone too. Whether you allow them such a responsibility is a decision for you and the mother alone - it's completely inappropriate for anyone else to interfere with that right.

I'd be absolutely furious if anyone did something like that without consulting me first. Particularly the facebook account as it potentially puts your child in all sorts of danger.

I'm so angry even imagining myself in your position! I don't know how you seem so calm!
I sincerely hope you re-assert your right to bring up your children as you deem appropriate and make sure your sister in law knows how you feel! How would she react if you say bought her kids lets say a couple of illegal BB guns without consulting her, claiming "it's just a bit of fun - all boys should have one" I'm quite sure she'd make her objections very clear!

comparing illegal BB guns to a mobile phone.. slaps head.

She has two sons. I think its because she's older than my wife and a bit of a control freak weras my wife is a passive person.

I'm well in the doghouse today as I started sounding off about it. I mean she could have at least asked.

In that case I would tell her to keep her cranky old nose out of your business and bring up her own kids and leave parental decisions on your family to you, the rightful parent.

Then I would punch her in the ovaries just for good luck.

Well now I trust him a lot more, this was more at the start when he was first given a phone, and he hadn't figured out how to delete his tracks :) Although in secondary school he's still only 11.

Completely disagree with this. Checking a phone is a over the top.

That's what I thought until his credit started lasting him 10 minutes, and then I found some adult chatline numbers on there.... Suffice to say his credit lasts longer nowadays.

No I'm comparing a BB gun for an older boy to a facebook account for an 8 year old. Both present real danger to someone without the maturity to use them safely.

You may slap your head all you like, but you'll only end up red faced ;)

And finally... This.

Can I have their numbers?

...

On another note, it depends on how you see it tbh, I had a mobile at 8, but all I used it for was Snake! :P

^LOL, calm down

I had a 3210 when I was 8. It was an awesome feeling when I came out at lunchtime and phoned my friend who had a 3310 asking him where he's at. Felt like I ran the place.
