do you think its ok for an 8 year old to have there own mobile phone ?

At 8 years old?

I think they're about the same age as I am. As I mentioned earlier, I was doing that sort of thing when I was 6, as were my friends. I'd often be out for most of the day without an adult in sight. In some ways, that was the point. It was our world.

It was normal in those days. Parents hadn't been conditioned to think there was a stranger who murders children hiding behind every other car or tree. Children tended to grow up faster in some ways in the past. Yes, I do mean that. This image of children in the past that everyone is so strongly conditioned to believe nowadays, an image in which people remained children until about 18, is not really true.

I think your sister in Law is bang out of order and I think having a conversation to puther in her place is urgently needed.

A mobile phone is not something to give a 8 year old. A few reasons for this, your kids have unrestricted access to anyone they like and anyone can contact them. I never needed a mobile at that ages and never even though of it. The local kids round my way dont have mobiles as there never miles away.I as a kid was always out climbing trees making dens and such forth and never required a phone

The facebook account is damn stupid. Facebook is not a safe place and its very easy to exploit people. Think about this; A pedo sees your kids profile. The account is all restricted but the profile picture and some small details are publically availible. The pedo contacts your kid and they get chatting. They swap mobile numbers and start chatting. Things can quickly spiral......

Yes I have a Facebook account and ime shore a lot of people here do. But were old enough to make decisions and know when somethings a miss. I would definatly close the facebook account but its upto you about the phones.

well Ive certainley put her in her place as she's ***** off home in a Huff.:D

The whole house is in silence the Wife's not said a word since I got in from work. thinks I'm over reacting though I havent confiscated the phones as that would be like shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. Whats done is done I just voiced my displeasure at her sisters forwardness.

My kids are talking to me though.:)

How do you delete a facebook account ?

Top right of the page click account->account settings at the bottom of the account settings page click deactivate account.

EDIT you might want to change the password as I don't think accounts are entirely deleted, just put in stasis so to speak, and anyone knowing the password could reactivate it.

By the time I was 8 (back in the 80s) I had my own bike and would go out with friends around their house or roaming, parents rarely knew exactly where I was... often we'd head off 1-2 miles, sometimes even 7 miles from home. I was the only one tho they let out just to roam at that age tho the others didn't get that kinda freedom til 14+... partly due to the way the world was changing and partly due to my younger siblings being a little less street smart.

Well done I agree with that. Just out of interest how are the phones paid for ? (payg or pay montly)

Maybe your kids could pay some of the running costs to the phones.

I might be over reacting here but my sister-inlaw has bought both my kids mobile phones and I'm not too happy about it .

I thought that It was my parental responsibility as a father to determine whether they should have mobile phones or not.

Am I over reacting ?

No. You are not over-reacting. She has no right to make that decision for you. Give them back, and tell her to clear all future presents through you first.

Cheeky cow!

That's trolling rubbish. :p

The question is whether 8 year olds who have an exciting social life when they're out on their own require mobile phones. ;)

Listen buster! it was a legit question with a dribble of fanboyism thrown in (and for good reason!) :p

I mean, on Android you can install something like Lookout or Where's My Droid and then use App Protector to hide them, then if the parent wants to check up on their little Timmy or Madeline (LOL) all they have to do is either log in on Lookout's website or send a keyword SMS to the phone which then both apps will trianglate the location using cell network towers and/or GPS and then mail back a Google Maps link or show on Google maps (if using Lookout).

Both apps are free by the way unlike on the iPhone counterparts unless I am mistaken!

Both phones are pay as you go and I wont be paying it will be strictly recieve only.:D

Receive only isn't too bad, but I'd say 8 is too young. Hopefully they won't use them too often, maybe then they will loose interest a little in phones and won't be paying £80 phone bills in their teens
