5 Days of BMW ownership... interesting!

And why the **** is R420LA6X2/4MNA talking about HGVs in this thread?

Probably because thats the angle* that I bring to these forums, sorry if you don't like it, actually, No. I could not care less. :p

*Yes, I know I go on & on about trucks, so what? if its really not liked here - which I hope its tolerated to a degree - then I'll shut up and go elsewhere, or you could just put me on the ignore list like everybody else.

I guess I'm the forum "Stuck record" :o :D

Lol, well I didn't expect you to lend so much credence to my comment.

It's great that you're passionate about lorries, I just can't see how it applies, whatsoever, to an E46 yup....er... BMW.

expecting abit much for a petrol car to pull away easily doing a hillstart at idle speed. slip the clutch for longer if you like driving like that, or just give it a few more rpms like everyone else. id expect the bmw to have a longer first gear than a focus...

Fair enough Robbie, :)

re- read my comments, I'd hope you'd see the link that's buried in my waffle....

Perhaps,on the other hand, I'm just rambling on again..... ;) :D

Anyway, I never mentioned the MAN TGA that Clarkson described as a "Van" .... Opps! there I go again...... ;)

Sorry I dont understand, are you saying you could pull away on a hill without accelerating before

Secondly Gloucester is in the middle of the Cotswolds, famed for...hills. How comprehensive was this test drive

I'm struggling to work out what your expectations are here.

A throw a comment taken to the next level. Is it really necessary?

My old bora v5 was excellent in stop/start traffic because it would chug along nicely at idle, however the bmw is not so capable at this, odd. Is it because it was a v5 engine and had more torque lower in the range?

I'm finding the new V6 will just pull away on anyincline without throttle. Idle in 1st is slower than anything I've had before though, mostly because it idles lower. I think the idle can apply quite a bit of throttle to govern itself too, it's fly-by-wire.

I've got to admit going up a hill without using the accelerator isn't even something that would occur to me, I'm aware that I could slip the clutch and move without actually using the accelerator pedal in some situations but I wouldn't think of doing so on a hill.

I'm not saying that I actually do this when driving but if you take your foot of the clutch slow enough most cars are actually capable of doing it.
Maybe if I'm stuck in traffic and just want to move forward a few feet and then stop.

It's just not something that would occur to me, I've always been of the understanding that slipping the clutch isn't something you want to do often - I know that you can do it but that doesn't mean that I would or should do it normally.

I've never had an issue with hills in the current car, but then, it's an auto :p

However, having regular use to a E46 330d too, that's a manual. That can accelerate easily to 50mph odd without me ever touching the accelerator. It will certainly go up slight inclines loaded with just the clutch. I remember loading on to the IOW ferry top deck with two bikes and a load of camping gear and never touched the accelerator. It just slowly pulled up. You don't dump the clutch, let it out slow and it will start to pull.

I can pull away on a hill with zero throttle input from me, but then my car is an automatic so that's no surprise.

You really can't do the same thing with a manual. Also, while l6 BMW's have decent torque, but they aren't what I would call really torquey engines, they don't make a particularly great deal of torque low down the rev range, you have to give them some throttle.

You can get to 50mph without even touching the throttle? WOW

Have never ever tried this on any car I've owned, I live on a slight hill so am going to give it a go in my Accord and then the wifes Civic and will report back. :)

To the OP, are you sure your clutch wasn't slipping in your ST?
