Hey guys,

Pretty much my first post here, been waiting for activation :p.

Right, to the point.

Currently My Setup is (Copy + Past from Order History):

Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM
Corsair Dominator 3GB (3x1GB) DDR3 PC3-14400C9 (1866MHz) Tri-Channel
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply
Windows7 32Bit Ultimate.

I do a fair bit of File Processing, I do a lot of programming, and a little bit of gaming.

Would an SSD last me long enough to be worth getting as they seem to have a short live span / reliability?

Idealy I want a 120 GB, Not sure if Raid would suit my purpose as I've never tried it and haven't looked into it.

I was thinking about the RevoDrive but its not released yet and since it doesn't support TRIM (to my knowledge) this is bad.

It will my used as my Primary drive and I want it to be as fast as the motherboard can accept (I don't want the SSD to be so much faster then my mobo's Bandwidth that its a big waste of money).

Whats your advice (to anyone whom is willing to provide) ? Stick with the WD VelociRaptor, Single 120GB SSD, Raid 0 2x60GB, wait for RevoDrive, and or Other >.<. (PS. £360 is around my Budget).

Many Thanks

Jamie.

They are more reliable/have a greater lifespan than most mechanical HDDs. this is helped by the fact they have no moving parts.

I would suggest going for a OCZ Vertex 2E drive, they come in few sizes and are all very fast and support TRIM.

One thing that strikes me with your spec is the 3GB RAM and 32bit OS. Is there a reason for this (software compatibility perhaps)?

No reason, Just havn't got more then 3G yet so I hacn't upgraded.

Would it worth going 2x 60GB Raid 0 or just stick with the 120 Standard?

Thanks for the input you two.

Jamie, check out my 2x 60GB RAID0 benches:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=16875612&postcount=26

With RAID0 you dont get TRIM support but you get almost double the speed of a single drive.
If you need the speed for Video editing or other disk intensive apps, then I would recommend it. If it's just going to be an OS with a few games.. I'd probably stick to a single drive.
It's up to you really, you're paying the same amount :)

I'd go for a single SSD. I had RAID with them but just didn't need the speed and went back to one drive.

Ordered!

OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive x2 (£246.78)
DPD Next Day Parcel Before 10: £17.75

No waiting for me, Should be here in the next 1.2.3.4...14 Hours :D

I plan to use Raid 0, If It turns out I don't need it then I can always use 2x 60 GB as Non Raid, which I can only see as being better then 1x 120GB (Faster, more Reliable then the 1x 120GB)

Go Me :D.

I plan to:
1) Enable AHCI.
2a) Configure Raid (?)
2b) Install Windows 7.
3) Update Chipset

4)... Done?

You wont be able to enable AHCI on a raid array. AHCI is however a subset of RAID, so ACHI will automatically be enabled on all non-raid member disks.
1) Create the RAID array in the BIOS - Set stripe to 128KB
2) Install Windows 7
3) Install Intel RST drivers - Reboot
4) Done \o/

Follow Up:

I believe I have set up the config correctly, Please Review my Bench32 Test (Only ran once).

Many Thanks,

excellent bench test results ,also make sure your on 1.5 firmware which has Garbage Collector for raidO it will do the same job as trim, all you have to do for it to work is sleep/log off for a couple of hours and it will clean the drives so perfomance will not deteroriate.Make sure HD power is set to always on in power options

I'd go for a single SSD. I had RAID with them but just didn't need the speed and went back to one drive.

same thing here, just didnt see the benefits.

to the OP: the corsair reactor is a good price here

and will do just as well as any other drive

its a good £80 cheaper than any other drive in its catagory
