Just upgraded my trusty old Gainward GTX260GS to a nice shiny XFX 5850 so thought i would share what i have found and stuff :p

the upgrade was a breeze and went without issue but have noticed something a little strange with 3dmark vantage, my old score with the nvidia card and processor overclocked to 3.5 had a much higher cpu score like 3x what i've got at the mo, i'm guessing it's the lack of physix that's the problem but that aside i'm very happy with my new card, it's running stock at the mo (725 Core & 4000 Mem) but will get round to overclocking soon, maybe after a cooler change as the one it come with gets a little hot for my liking

anyway as i've said i only got it today so haven't done much so far just 3dmark vantage and fallout 3 (modded) and now i can run it @ 1920x1080 on ultra settings with no slow downs even running 2 GTX260's with overclocked CPU couldn't do that so i'm very happy so far, i'll be updating this thread over the next couple of days with updates if anyone's interested along with overclocks and all that :)

i'm just installing crysis at the mo as that was a game that as with all but the ultra rich could play on ultra so lets see if 2 or so years after the game come out if it's now playable or not lol

here's a link to the old thread where i upgraded from 2x 8800GT's in sli to 2x GTX260s in sli

i'll update when i've done a little more testing but may take some time due to steam having a big sale last week so got loads of games to test :D

in the mean time could someone please recommend a cooler and tell me if i can run an nvidia card for physix ( i do have a 8600GTS but have no idea if it will work or how to get 2 different cards to play nice together)

pics & benchmarks coming soon

Is the cooler for the 5850?
You can use the 8600GTS for PhysX, but you will have to use hacked drivers I believe.

I you can use the offical drivers now as there last set of drivers as they forgot to disable physx if ATI was detected and wound up leaveing it in.

I have a 9600GT i am buying 5870 or 5850 soon should i keep the 9600gt for PhysX.

Does it really help that much as in FPS ?

And do you need to mod/hack say the next set of new drivers that come out.

Thanks.

yes i want to replace the stock one, it looks well weedy and as there's no silly stickers on the plate holding it in place i thought why not :)

that's cool i downloaded them when i read about the possibility a week or so ago just in case i could get the money together for the new card :)

will the 8600gts be any good for physx or will it be worth getting something a little faster and if so what sort of thing should i be looking at? with Mafia II just round the corner i want to make sure i can play it with all the nice bits turned to the max :D

I am alittle curious about physX and the 5850..

I tried to run dragon age and it said there was a problem with Physx, so I downloaded the Nvidia PhysX driver and ran the game and it worked fine...

So, does the 5850 have physX or do you really need a separate card??

Not much to report so far haven't had the time to do much but did try crysis and i have to say there is an improvement over 1 GTX260 i'm getting a steady 35fps on the first part of the game with everything maxed and on stock settings couldn't for some reason run the built in benchmarks it said something about somthing missing but i'll look into that tomorrow, haven't really had time to do much more i had planed on installing the 8600gts and giving it a try as a physX card but just didn't have the time so glad the weekend is almost here :D
