5870 or GTX470?

I don't agree with this.

A 5870, 5970, and GTX480 are all a BIG upgrade from a 5850. A GTX470 is an upgrade for DX11 performance and features, but a lateral move in general.

Out of that list, only a 5970 would be. A 5850 is only a few FPS less than a 5870 and less so clock for clock.

Also minbh, don't bother with the GTX465 if you already have a 5850.

You certainly go against the grain with your opinions.

I care more about giving good advice than brand loyalty and popular opinion.

In this case, ATi makes two cards and NVIDIA makes one card that are very significant upgrades over a 5850 and "worth buying". When someone asks "What should I upgrade to?" I don't consider "Keep what you have and save a few bucks" an answer if there are cards to upgrade to. (unless there's no reason to upgrade like a stated caveat such as "I have a 17" lcd and only play WOW")

Sorry, you're wrong.

At 19X12 Metro2033 (GREAT game, BTW) the 480 is at 34fps, the 5870 at 28fps and the 5850 at 23fps. You can't even play Metro with the 5850, other two you can.

At COD MW2, the 480 is at 91fps and 5850 is at 73fps- that's over 20% faster, more headroom to crank AA.

At Far Cry 2 the 480 is at 95fps and the 5850 is at 58fps.

At Stalker, the 480 is at 70fps, the 5870 at 65, the 5850 way down at 53.

At Dirt2, the 480 is at 91, the 5870 at 80, and the 5850 way down at 68.

I could go on, but it's pretty obvious that from a performance standpoint the 480 and 5870 are an upgrade over a 5850.

@Jethro Bodine: that is compare GTX480 with 5850 & 5870, I care to GTX470! GTX480 is too hot with my local weather (room temp is alway 30-33oC), and it is expensive too.

Any information a next generation Fermi?

Blah Blah Blah

Soooo the only game you would notice any difference is Metro... WOW!!!
There is no possible way to justify upgrading from a 5850 to a 5870. The bench marks you've shown do little to convince.
You say you care about giving good advice.... but you're not.
The 480 would be an upgrade (again, this is game dependant) but still not by enough. And if you were to OC the 5850 it would become a marginal at best unless Physx and CUDA are important to you.
I think that doing nothing and keeping your current card is always the question you should ask yourself before you buy a new one. Especially when you already have a high spec CURRENT gen card!
Joker.

Eh, so in your opinion neither card is a big enough upgrade, in mine, either would be. Not like there's a right or wrong answer on what constitutes an upgrade, I'd definitely buy a 5870 if I had a 5850 and wanted to upgrade.

You can OC a 5850, but you can OC a 5870 too, and he said heat is a factor to him.

I don't consider a 470 the right path here- same performance at most stuff, more heat where it's been noted ambient is 91F(!).

Personally I think he needs an air conditioner more than a video card, keep my house 73F year round.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. There is no way I could recommend a friend upgrade from a 5850 to a 5870. I would feel I had given them bad advice.
As the OP has already decided to go with a 470 (which I personally think is proper mental and more of a sideways move than upwards) it's a mute point.
Might as well close the thread.

Don't lay down any money, the GTX470 althrough you can get one at a very decent ptrice form here, is only more of a side step even if you over clock saying that you can overclock your current card.

its your money at the end of the day through, but if you wanted cuda and that why did you buy a HD5850 in the first place
