Manhunt in Northumbria on BBC

Still no news anywhere on the net, not even the BBC, about him being dead. Only sky sources. I guess they don't want to commit until it's actually confirmed by the police.

But this may effect with regards to tracking shotguns, where did the gun come from

I honestly don't know how much stricter tracking can become? There is already a massive database tracking serial numbers.

I would put money on this being an "untrackable" illegal firearm, most likely either stolen or very old with no serial numbers.

The laws are already incredibly strong as is the tracking and management associated with licensing. None of this helps with illegal weapons.

Yer, having just come out of jail of course he didn't hold a licensed firearm :)

True, as he seved more than 3 months but less than 3 years in prison he was banned from having a shotgun for 5 years after his release. So someone supplied him with the gun, hopefully the serial No. will be linked to someone, unless it was a stolen/unregistered gun in the first place.

I know, not that I want tigher laws having owned both a shotgun and a Rimfire (high velocity bullets), if we dont contain what we have seen in recent times then it could effect the genuine people who go hunting/shooting.

6 months ago there wouldnt have been a problem, but 2 incidents in close timings is not good for the people who own firearms :(

thesun says he survived

Well, the sun say:

"An ambulance rushed the crazed gunman under armed guard the 30 miles to the General, arriving there at 2.05am.
He was rushed into casualty where surgeons immediately set to work saving his life.
PC Rathband was continuing to be cared for in another area of the hospital.
An eyewitness who saw Moat being taken into casualty said: "The ambulance raced up with five police cars escorting it.
"Moat was brought out on a stretcher and taken straight in at speed. He was completely covered by a blanket but it looked like he had an oxygen mask on."

ok so we have derek bird , raoul moat who's next and how long will it take to change gun law.

Precisely how will changing the law on gun ownership and usage stop people who are determined to commit harm to themselves and others  I'm not being all nails and street but I know exactly where to go right this moment and buy a firearm and ammunition if I wanted to. Firearms outside the law will not conform to the law.

It's like stupidly restrictive game/music DRM the only thing law changes will affect are not those who will break the law but those who obey the law for their hobby/passtime.
