Mental Health Related Films

Going to watch another one of these today, A Beautiful Mind, but K-Pax is defenatly one of my new fave films.

Shine

A brilliant film staring Geoffrey Rush (he won the Best Actor Oscar for his perfermance).

Tony Manero

A film set during the Pinochet dictatorship of Chile. The main character, Raúl, has dreams of winning the national televisions Tony Manero impersonator contest. Raúl is a psychotic serial killer who's obsession with John Travolta's character (Tony Manero) in Saturday Night Fever leads to murder and betrayel.

Taxidermia

From imdb - "Lajoska embalms his father, stuffing straw into his stomach through the holes the cats gnawed. We next see him strapped standing into an elaborate contraption in the basement of his workshop. Pumps slowly sigh, liquid flows through clear tubes, syringes dive into flesh, and trays of scalpels and other vicious medical instruments move past on articulated arms.
With the aid of mirrors, clamps and levers, Lajoska begins the exacting and painstaking work of eviscerating himself". You have to have a pretty serious mental illness to do that kind of thing.

There will be blood is a good one, if you like Daniel Day Lewis

- is a good scene lol

I do like these movies but you do have to watch them as films and don't think they are accurate. A beautiful mind for example was really enjoyable to watch but I then read about Nash's real life and it was completely different!

SPOILERS!

For example he never had any visual hallucinations in real life - he only sometimes heard voices, whereas in the film they make out that he saw people. Also they didn't mention the fact that he got some random girl pregnant and then abandoned her and his son, nor the fact that he divorced his wife, got fired for exposing himself in a men's toilet, and so on... Stuff like the pen sequence or him giving a nobel speech were just completely fabricated. Also he completely stopped taking medication whereas the film says he was still on it.

I don't want to get too serious and this is only one of those mentioned but it's good to know when something is so inaccurate.
