Driving, women vs men?

One thing I don't quite get is people (women mainly IME) that will drive at say 30mph until they are a couple car lengths from a queue of traffic at a red light and then bang on the anchors to pull to a halt - I'm not sure whether it's just lack of attention generally, that they are expecting the queue to suddenly disappear when the light goes green or that their vision only extends 2 car lengths in front but I'm normally off the accelerator and letting the car slow down itself way in advance - I thought that was just 'normal' driving but I seem to be in the minority over here though :p

I don't ride the clutch, purely because I'd get cramp in my foot. My clutch is like trying to stuff a petulant child into a bucket with your foot.

So much so I'm inclined to do it downhill as well.

I don't think it's exclusively women. I probably see more men doing this than women. I ride the clutch (but don't rock backwards and forwards) if I know I probably won't be stationary for a long period. If the lights have just changed red then I nock it out of gear.

More disputing the fact he can get away with not using the handbrake at all. I sit on the brake and clutch if it's for a short time and there isn't much of an incline but there's situations were I need to do it.

Fixed.

I haven't come across a single incline where the it was impossible to safely move off without use of the handbrake. :)

That's down to your limited driving experience is it not? I have come across these situations, especially a certain hill in St Albans where if you're not using the handbrake, you're either going to smoke your cabin with clutch or you'll roll back dangerously.

if i go up a hill, i stop at the top, get the bite and wait for a free slot to pull out.

i dont roll back or forward, perfect clutch control

Yeah great for you, as I said, you'll need it when you find one of those hill things.

No I won't, because I'll just do heel and toe, as I said earlier, and always do.

I'm not saying using the handbrake is wrong, and what I do is right. This was just a thread about how you take on hills, and I made my post. But you just had to keep questioning me didn't you?

I was just questioning why you don't spare the clutch and your foot the 'abuse' and use the handbrake which I assume is there for a reason. You seem to stating that there isn't a single situation where a handbrake will be of use and I'm argueing otherwise.

99% of the time it's heel and toe for me too but there are times where it makes little sense not to use the handbrake. My clutch control is not in question ;)

I get the feeling I'm one of the minority on the roads today I use my handbrake in most situations when I will be stopped for more than a second or two. And I almost never ride the clutch.

I don't understand people who find it hard work, if anything it's easier than holding it with your feet, is just as quick and leaves less chances for things to go wrong, also at night you're not dazzling the driver behind you.

People actually heel toe when pulling away?

Depends if you class lifting off the brake and moving to the accelerator as heel toe. If there's a risk of rolling back then I'll use the handbrake. I don't particularly like it when people roll back towards me so I don't do it ether.
