Nvidia Releasing Something Big???

Engadget said:
NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460 hasn't even been officially announced, much less reviewed, but that won't keep you from buying the company's latest Fermi-based graphics card anyhow. Over at Newegg, usual suspects ASUS, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI and Palit have fielded twelve models in all, most with slightly different features, thought it seems the base configuration has 336 CUDA cores (down from 352) and a mere 768MB of GDDR5 memory. Interestingly enough, this silicon's actually rated faster than its older brother the $280 GTX 465 with 675MHz graphics and 1,350MHz processor speeds, and a 3.6GHz effective memory clock. All your frames are pushed through a decidedly narrower 192-bit memory interface, though, so we'd guess that for around $200, you won't be getting (much) more than you pay for. Let's just hope they run cool.

$200USD. Hmm...

Wow.. that new annnouncment was so amazing nvidia...............the all new super amazing 460 you say?!! so worth a superclimactic countdown................................... failing to impress again....as always . w00t!

looks like a great mid-range card, and one which I would upgrade my HD5770. But the price is a tad too expensive for the 1gb version , and is in the HD5850 terrority.

Agree, and it's possible that ATI (if they have any sense) will reduce the prices on their mid-range cards now that they've got decent competition.

The price on the 1GB 460 should be around the £180 mark (based on US prices and including vat) but it looks like they'll be £200, plus retailer gouging.

in the OCuk shop now :)

768mb is £160 and the 1GB is £189-199

good competitive pricing

Not as bad as I thought!

Tempted by the OC'd one at 199...although you could probably acheive the same clocks from the cheaper one, would be worth the extra tenner for a guaranteed clock I think.

How do these fit into the big scale of things ATI compared graphic cardly?

Is it on par with a 5850?

The 1GB overclocked, against a standard 5850, is beating it in most tests. But then again you can OC a 5850. On the other hand, it's £30-40 cheaper.

Pros and cons as far as I can see:
+brings Nvidia back up to speed on the htpc front with bitstreaming
+price might ignite a little price war

-2x6pin required on a mid range card
-cooler exhausts heat back into the case (so even if it runs cooler than all the competition, it is still putting some of that heat into your other components)
-Nvidia are suggesting these are for overclocking (makes no sense as I suggested about the issue with the cooler)
-bitstreaming isn't supported in the drivers yet
-3D surround isn't *really* suited for the cheapest cards of this range

Of course if you have a waterloop some of the negatives go away. (*I'm still reading reviews though at this moment, having just finished the Anandtech review*).

So....is it likely to be relatively 8800'esque for fan noise? or another loud fermi?

Going to check out reviews now...

Apart from the Zotac design (pity, I liked the look of it), reviewers are saying it varies from so quiet you can't hear it, to barely audible.

they seem pretty quiet the 460s - but get one with an upgraded cooler not the standard one and you cant go far wrong.

performance is okay though, but the reviews i have seen are showing that the core wont really go much above 800-850...which is around 14800/15000 3dmark vantage.

im considering switching my gtx 470 for one...but the 470 stock beats all overclocked GTX 460.. and i can easily overclock my gtx470 to 800 core too, which puts my 3dmark vantage above 16,000.
