Many Thanks.

Right, following on from the "Lan partys a thing of the past" thread, it got me thinking that an annual unofficial OcUK Lan Party would be pretty cool.

Most of us are a reasonable bunch of chaps and chapesses.

Obviously, if we are going to do this, it will need to be done properly if it is going to be sucessfull.

Therefore, I am proposing we elect a commitee to organise the event.

I would very much like to be involved as I feel I could help others to pull this off.

We obviously need some of the technically minded from the forum to be on the comittee to help with setting up the network and troubleshooting on the day.

We obviously also need people to provide switches, servers and cabling and a projector and screen.

Thoughts?

Let's try and keep this grown up people, it is a serious proposition and something I am prepared to invest a lot of time in to make it work.

NOTICE:

The majority will already be aware of this, but....

This event is in NO WAY connected to Overclockers UK (Esnet Ltd).

Also, while measures WILL be taken to provide adequate security at the event, you are responsible for ANY possessions you bring into the venue.

Any questions, please email me via the contact details below:

There's a guy on here who has ran several LAN's recently around Halifax area I think, he should be able to help a fair bit if he sees this.

Where would the location be for this proposed LAN party ?

This is something which will need to be discussed.

I would hope to have it as central as possible for everyone which will mean travel.

I would have thought arranging travel by coach/car sharing should not be a problem.

Well I live in Welwyn Garden City Hertfordshire. I have my own Car so if you manage to sort something out I would definatley be up for it. Keep me posted if it comes together.

By the way what game or games would you be into playing ?

If you planned for the north east, I know of people who do organise very small LAN events twice per year for their clan, although it would be better to do it centrally.

And as for finding someone technically minded on this forum, can you imagine the carnage? No, you do it this way . . . . No this way . . . . There would be a week of people setting it up, stripping it down, setting it up and no one would get a chance to play any games . . . . :D

Good luck!

I thought it was straight forward to make a LAN dont you just plug all your ASDL cables into one router ?

I have a LAN set at home which I just intuitively put together. Me and my son play Farcry 2 on LAN but it gets boring just the 2 of us.

I'm a networking noob but I've never seen a router with 50 slots? :p

Home networks are run differently to LANs. Especially since there will be specific servers for different games (presumably) so the servers will have to have the appropriate software and ports opened on them all. Its more just because it is larger scale entirely.

Take it online with Hamachi

Sounds like a good idea, I can't offer much help on the technical side, but I'd definitely be interested in coming along for some gaming! :D

Surely it's nearly the same either way ( unless you're talking 200+ pc's/devices)?
1 router with dchp enabled.
As many switches ( or routers with dchp disabled if you want) as you like/need. After that it's plug&play ?

( I have a home network with 3 routers ( 2 only used as switches) in it configured by myself)...

You should get a hold of UV, from here iirc he sets lans up fairly regularly (not sure if it's with a community or part of his job)

I personally think to be 100% successfull the venue needs to be super cheap, and therefore the entry tickets super cheap also, to put it into the range of ("well for 15 we will give it a go spec stuff") I dont really have much time on my hands so although i wont officially take any part in it, i will help where i can. It might sound silly but surely its also a massive opportunity for ocuk to setup trade stand and sell some gear ?.

I also think your best of setting a first lan event with relativily small targets in mind and also in a small time scale as ive always found, folks who are interested now , may have no interest in 3 months, leading to epic fail. Maybe if you search for a 45 person venue then it would be a good target and make for a good community/sociable atmosphere.

I'm up for it, always wanted to attend a lan but never got round to it. I live in the South East, and can drive as long as it doesn't end up being massively far away.
