GTX295 for GTX480?

Sure SLI can have issues, but the OPs statement seems a bit strong compared to the experience of the majority of people. Only a small number of mainstream games do you have to wait for driver support for SLI to work properly and even then its usually days, couple of weeks tops. So I'm not suprised people who have used SLI for awhile find it a little odd.

Part of the problem is nVidia don't really advertise the stand alone SLI profile updates they do between driver updates - a lot of people don't even seem to know they exist.

I agree with most of what he says - and I have far more experience with SLI.

Its not quite as plug and play as the average consumer might like sure. But its very rare I've been waiting on driver support or not been able to get something working decently in some fashion.

Your missing the second part of his point. When a game doesn't work with SLI, you can change the rendering mode to SLI AA and make some useage of the SLI that way.

But seriously who can be bothered with all that faffing around, single GPU ***

And that's if you realise SLI/CF isnt working, otherwise you just take a 80% performance hit

I'd take a single GPU solution over a multi GPU any day... but sometimes you get setups that are just better i.e. when I bought my GTX260 SLI setup originally it was very slightly cheaper for 2 of them compared to 1 GTX28x and gave better performance in most cases by quite a margin.

Maybe Rroff should start an SLI clinic to help everyone else.

no thanks - would spend too much time dealing with people who'd ignored all the reviews and bought 2x GTX295 and wondering why they sucked at 2560x with 16x AA.

I agree on the face of it you can get good bang for the buck like 5770CF and 460GTX SLI but seriously who wants the agro?

What aggro? well sure crossfire isn't quite as mature as SLI and theres been the odd driver upset with it (10.6, etc.) but even crossfire generally just works 99 times out of 100.

edited the post sorry, still waking up and not making complete sense.

Incase its not clear - what hes saying is - when games have come out that don't have decent SLI support - you can still get some decent useage from SLI in "some fashion" by enabling SLI AA - which will give you accelerated AA rendering - i.e. if you were using 8x AA with SLI AA it would take most of that hit and give you similiar performance as a single card without AA - but with 8x AA and so on - this usually works even in games that don't support SLI rendering modes (AFR, SFR).

Yep- you get it. Most popular games have profiles at launch, or soon enough not to care. What doesn't you can force AFR1,AFR2, or SFR on and get SLi benefits.

As far as me having no problems with SLi over the years, I mainly play popular shooters, so it's not like I'm the guy posting "Nuts! Tiny indie company X just launched "Rage of the Elf", an RTS game with bitmapped graphics!".

It could be I've run across some I don't recall, but other than when Quad SLi launched on 7900 and had DX9 pre-render limitations and when I was trying to 3 way 8800GTXs in the early days of Vista, my experience has been mostly positive.

I was just curious about the OPs statements that he's "tired of waiting on games" like it happens all the time that he can get no benefit from SLi.
