The Official "Unofficial" OcUK Forum, Annual LAN Party

Moredhel, I am the Chair if you will of this commitee and I understand you have your concerns regarding this event, that is your personal opinion and you are entitled to that.

I would however like to kindly ask you do not assume how this is being organised. Myself and a group of well informed and extremely committed forum members are working hard to ensure this event is a HUGE success.

There is much happening behind the scenes which I feel is not conductive were it to be posted on the forum at this early stage.

I think that all involved at this stage are working very hard and I have full confidence this event will go ahead.

Obviously, the proof is in the pudding so I look forward to seeing you at the event.

If you have any further concerns, please mail me directly at jamespalmer at ntlworld.com

I would rather keep the negativity away from the thread, especially when the guys behind the scenes are doing all they can and have shown more commitment than I could have hoped for.

What you're essentially doing is trying to build a lan by committee, this will never work. You need a leader, who get's a core team on board who are dedicated to getting this working, then, when you've designed how it will work and when, and worked out the COSTS of everything and what you would need to charge to at least break even if you're not doing it for profit, you can market it and get people to come.

No other way will work, best case this thread will die and nothing will come of it. Worst case you'll flog it into the ground in desperation to get it working, lose lots of money, and give LAN parties an undeservedly bad reputation. I've seen this FAR too often with new LANs.

At the minute this reads like 10,000 threads I've seen on dozens of LAN party forums that never go anywhere or leave people upset and financially down. This isn't just amateurs, I've seen companies right up to Intel themselves make the mistakes in here.

As gimpymoo has posted, he is heading this up. I'm also providing a lot of support and advice and have ran a lot of decent size lan parties myself. I wouldn't worry too much.

loughborough sounds good, (my gf is in leic) and im in stafford so not too far. would need someone to drive though! :P (however my pc is only tiny!)

I've got a 7 seater Voyager with dvd player that i can drive, and from memory you/parents live just down the road. I could possibly give a lift to others as well if they could realistically get near to where i live.

For us Scots (which there are a few), Loughbough is a tricky place to get to.
I accept location is always going to be tricky - I admitted this in my previous post, and said I (we?) expected and accepted we had to travel a bit of a distance - but please pick a location where the majority can get to easily. A major city, would be easier than some out of the way town. For the Scottish lot (and fellow 'locals' correct me if I'm wrong) we/I would like to see a more major city considered.

To me, Leeds looks idea - for everyone -, Manchester being the second choice. Anything further South than these and I imagine you will fail to get anything more than a handful of the Scots to this event.

This event is for the WHOLE forum as a community.

One of my priorities is to make the event accessible for as many members as possible.

As you point out, location will always be tricky, HOWEVER, as I said near the start of this thread, the event needs to be located somewhere which is realistically accessible to all while at the same time balancing the needs of the event itself.

I am not going to comment on individual venues but all I will say at the moment is that we need to look at as many venues in as many different locations as possible once we can establish where the majority of attendees will be travelling from. In the mean time, we need to consider as many venues as possible to at least assess if they meet the criteria above.

Assessing all these venues is not something which will be done overnight but is something which will be dealt with as a matter of urgency but nothing will be rushed as I believe that would lead to mistakes being made which is NOT an option.

Things are happening behind the scenes at the moment, however, as I mentioned in a previous post, I do not feel it would be conductive to discuss things on this public forum at such early stages.

Im with Ahleckz, Leeds is a great suggestion, deff not for any selfish reasons at all :D

Edit: plus drinking beer while gaming has to be a priority!

As much as gimpymoo can look for venues in 'ideal' cities it really comes down to what venues are available with the things like 24 hour access and decent enough power (and internet ideally).

Central location is good, Manchester might be too difficult to get to for some of the southerners as well.

Can you estimate what sort of price this might be? 5,10,15??

Also, It might be in Overclockers.co.uk interest to get involved.

Could make this nice and proffesional, make them a bit of money.

Get them to make up a few of their pre-built systems, offer them for rent for the event, get a couple of guys down to try and sell them, could see some nice profit for the company.
I'm sure that there will be more than a couple of people interested in this event that don't have high end systems at the moment, and would pay a small premium to rent them for the day... Maybe they will be impressed enough to purchase something afterwards.
Possibly a very good business opportunity

Fair enough, depending on location etc.. I think £30 is the absolute maximum I would pay. Ideally lower

Is the plan for it to be over a few days ? ie all weekend ? if so i think you will probably be looking at more like £50+ or so depending on numbers.

I was assumed 1 day, If it was a weekend thing then you will have to do it not in university term time, there is a lot of students on this forum

I'll come if you can make it central.

I think the mid-way point between me and the guys in Scotland is Bulgaria. Maybe Greece or Northern Turkey might work too.

I can't comment on what gimpy will decide to do but at many multi-day lans you can purchase single-day tickets for less. When I ran fragM we avoided this due the nightmares it presents for organisation but you never know...

Im not too sure how going away friday night and returning sunday night interferes too much with Uni stuff during term time, i know a lot of students that do just that.

Depends on your course tbh, the people On my course that did that had to work massively to catch up.

If in term time i'd still be well up for a single day ticket though also. The sooner we have a games list the better
