*Official OMG I got my 460 thread*

Yup, where are all the MSI and Giga cards!

They seem to be aplenty over the pond :(

The noise just doesn't make sense, why are the 460 cards so noisy, especially at idle?

My GTX 280 is loud at full load but at idle with reduced fan rpm it's very quiet, why aren't the GTX 460 cards quiet at idle, don't they reduce the clockspeeds and volts?

They do.

The reason they are loud is because all the card makers have decided to penny pinch and put shoddy cheap coolers on them. :(

If you look at a review of any of the GTX460's that use the official nvidia reference cooler they are all praised for being so quiet.

They just seem to have crap fan profiles set in the bios and poor cooling solutions to save money, I run my sonic Plat @ 40% fan limited on idle which is completely silent with a temp of 52c, I don't think it's a problem with actual architecture.

Edit - Beaten

Cost cutting on the cooling solutions. Like i said before, if my experience on the 4850 was anything to go by then Gainward (Palit) have a history of cutting corners. Badly.

The Galaxy card looks like it might be manufactured by Palit, it has the power connectors in the same place, and the heatsink looks very similar to the Sonic Platinum. The only difference seems to be the output configuration. I'd like to see an end-on shot of the Galaxy card to see if it has the same Cap layout with the VRM's running most of the width of the card, if so then i'm 99% sure it's a Palit design PCB.

It seems pretty clear to me that some of these early GTX460 1GB cards were rushed out big time. The best companies are yet to release theirs because they probably spent a good bit of time on the cooling designs (remember most of these guys are using the reference PCB!).

The cores for the 1GB cards might not be as plentiful as the 768MB versions, but there is no way in hell that Nvidia would have given them all to these second rate brands. All the major partners would have been given a similar number, they just haven't rushed them out the door.

When i can get my hands on a Gigabyte/MSI/ECS/EVGA i'll post my impressions and make some recordings of the fan noise (i have a fairly decent mic to record with).

I understand the frustration of the people who have been burnt by these shady manufacturers, but i'm confident things will be a lot better when the top makes hit retail.

Hmm I think we are slowly starting to eliminate the options ;) I'm sure we will find one which will be worth going for in terms of build quality and cooling.

Yeah but there's going to be a lot of people out there who are satisfied with what they get, right? not everyone is fussy enough to return their card, some people don't have the thought in their head whether its noisy or not, they fit it and think thats the best you'll get and forget it once they whacked their sound system up, blabbering on their headset or have some noisy family or mates drowning out the pc cooling :D

Yeah, I got the Gainwards GLH card.
Ordered two of them, currently only one installed, waiting for my sli bridge from the mail. also waiting from mail a scythe vga chip heatsink kit to install on those cards.

this card is a beast. P17k 3dmark vantage score.

and hi my first post here

Well I'd say they are talking bobbins about it keeping noise to a minimum.

This whole fiasco is really highlighting to me who I can actually trust with reviews.

EDIT- Also they are claiming 55C furmark load temps... they must be running that on a bench in a bloody fridge.

EDIT2- "However, when the fan speed is moved to 100% the fan speed only registers 77% in Afterburner"

My fan speed match exactly in both. Sounds to me like a tweaked fan profile, claiming 100% when fan is only at 77%. Or maybe i'm just getting paranoid now! o_O

I wasn't saying that my temp was impressive, just that you can run the Sonic Plat's card silently @ idle albeit at higher temps.

I scrambled so fast to power down my system and pull my gpu out my machine that I knocked my secondary 20" panel off the top of my PC :o, seems to be working still though albeit a couple of fresh scratches on the frame :D, I better of made it in time for that hassle.
