How much money to live on?

You're not supposed to be living on Jobseekers, it's supposed to be something to tie you over until your next employment.

I'm still looking for work and therefore living frugally off JSA and the thing that cancels out council tax, but for my old / normal lifestyle, I need 1K per month e.g. £15K/year before tax.

Scots don't pay tuition fees (I think), but English folk who cross the border do have to pay. I could be wrong, but I really can't be bothered to Google. Check out the UCAS website, or Student Finance via Direct.gov.

This is true although for English students who do a 4 year course in Scotland i.e. an ordinary (honours) degree they will get one year "free" so in effect are no worse off than if they'd studied in England... except they'll be in Scotland before some wag says it. :p

When mates have been on the dole for whatever reason, the total usually covers rent food etc.
If not, that's more than I'm living off at the moment x 6 :P

I dont understand.

£65.45 a week is £284 a month. My rent alone in a shared house is £325, food is £20 a week (£87 a month) bringing the total to £412 a month then there is bills, travel and clothing on top of that

I dont really see how the law says you can live on £65.45 a week. Maybe "the law" should try living on £284 a month and see how they get on!

yeah it's amazing how many times we see in the paper 'people starving after being forced to live on 65.45 a week' you might be entitled to housing allowance and help with your council tax.

People obviously can survive on that amount, millions do.

Move into council accomodation and its fairly easy.

Alternatively, give up smoking the weed with your mates, will free up some cash.

I heard in Scotland aslong as your doing a 4 year Degree you dont have to pay tuition costs?

Maybe im just dumb and my gf is even more of a retard.

Our first undergraduate degree is 'free', in so far as we don't pay tuition fees. The Scottish government pay for them. It's pretty good.

Not including the mortgage etc. an average week will be comfortable with £100. If it invovles a couple of decent nights out in london then £300 is about right.

I agree, the system is a bit messed up.
There should be much better means testing for the amount you receive, as that's a pretty big drop in income.

If your only income is JSA, IS etc you will be eligible for HB/CTB.

that in itself is worth £350+ depedant on your circumstances.

JSA, HB and CTB keeps a roof over your head and food in your belly and a bit of cash for travel etc.

i have a mortgage and all associated bills. i asked them at the job centre how i was to survive. they will pay the interest on my mortgage after 12 weeks of claiming (i think i may still be claiming after this time - i'm not having much luck on the job front) then was advised to use my savings. so, bye bye savings essentially. little peeved to say the least compared to some of the other people in the country who get a quite comfortable amount in benefits.
its scandalous isnt it. your actually better off selling your house and renting one since they dont mind paying rent despite not paying mortgages :/

Good. There's no way you can expect the tax payer to fund you and expect to keep your savings.

why ? he saved and paid tax on all the money he has earnt and then saved

if he had no savings because he had spent it all on crack and had never ever had a job instead of having one for enough time to get a mortgage and savings then he would be MUCH better off. and that is whats wrong
