5850, 5870 and GTX 470 reduced in price, what you think?

So you think a newbie like my self can overclock a 5850 to near 5870 speeds?

On the overclockers website, which is a good overclocker?

Someone mentioned reference Asus 5850, they have reference xfx. Good enough?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-148-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411

Additionally wont I have to up the fan speed etc, to compensate with increased heat? Wont this make it noisy?

Or is it a cool running card even when heavily overclocked?

Also I dont ever install the catalyst control center, so I can still overclock the card with out running the ccc?

Well I game at 940 clock and 1250 memory (asus reference) with 1.187v.

If you take time to read online how its done, you will easily do it, no need for CCC but do download MSI Afterburner and make sure to buy either reference 5850 (bat mobile cooler).

The XFX you linked is not reference card, I don't think so, you can call up the overclockers uk and check with sales department but I don't think its reference design.

The £250 though price asus 5850 Direct Cu ( non-reference but has voltage control thanks to ASUS smart doctor) runs very cool and very quiet even when overclocked but it is a little pricey as you CAN find reference 5850 for £200.

From looking at benchmarks the gtx 470, just seems such a bad card. Its worse performance than a 5850, more expensive runs hot and sucks power.

How can Nvidia engineer a card like this? Seems like they havent thought this through at all.

Anyway, the His Icooler 5850, looks ok performance wise. Doesnt do so well in Warhead, which although is not a game I ant to play any more, but is still a respectable benchmark to consider, especially with crysis 2 on the horizon!

That kind of leaves me back looking at the 5870's again. I missed the boat recently with another website selling a powercolour stock 5870 with free shipping for £265, thinking I should have got it.

The His 5870 that overclockers have on sale currently is 287, basically £10 off the other 5870's at 300, and some of those come with AVP which I would buy any way if I got a dx 11 card. So thats worth about £20 on its own.

So now Im back at the £300 price bracket, and for £311 you can get this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

Which being a noob overclocker, looks good.

Question still remains. Stick with my 3870x2 and pospone dx11 games untill ATI release the 6870 and just buy that for what ever they are asking for, (which cant be more than around £300 any way realistically) or buy something now.

I need a card to last me 2-3 years

How many times are you going to ask the same questions?

How many threads are you going to create in the video card section asking about 5850-5870-470?

Do you really thing the 6870 will be £300 on release when the 5870 was £340-350 on release and are still holding at £300 now.

You have Clearly answered your own question so just buy the 5870

Ok, I understand that Im going over the same topics all the time, but Im learning new things by doing so!

What I learnt only today is abot the Asus cards and their smart doctor technology!

I'd hate to be waiting for you to order off a menu, I'd die of starvation. ;):D

If you are going to buy now then get the best you can afford. Simple at that.

just to clear something up, if you say the 5850 performs better than the 470 then you're either looking at results which don't matter like maximum fps or really old games or you don't take into account the massive fps increase with 257 drivers or you don't take into account the ridiculous scaling of overclocking fermi

heat - not a problem, all modern processors get extremely hot and can certainly take it
noise - only a problem if you don't wear a headset which I'd bet most PC gamers do
expense - it's a non-issue, plus if an extra £35 gets you the equivalent of paying an extra £87 or £190, you'll probably find a way to pay the extra

So the GTX 470 is a good card with the latest drivers?

Yes, you are right, I have been forgetting that whilst looking at benchmarks!

They are all benchies from when the card was first released.

About the noise, however, I dont really want to have to wear headphones, just to hear the audio!

Do you own a gtx 470?

Ok Iv found a review here that covers the gtx 470 written on the Jul 13, 2010, thats make the GTX 470 look like a good card!

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=955

If it offers near 5870 performance, then that is great, and would be the card for me to get. About heat, im not particualriy fussed, sound maybe an issue tho!

The 470 is a better card than the 5870 in those tests.

I would go for the 470 easily!

I'd be a little wary of that site. GTX470s are great cards, but faster/as fast as 5870s they are not. PcP's list of games benched are almost exclusively those known to run well on Nvidia hardware (Unreal engine games, Farcry Dunia engine etc). I wonder what would happen if they put Stalker clear sky or Fallout 3 on there.

With the prices things are going for, I would get a 5850 and clock it to 5870 speeds

Bangs head against Wall!

Yes I see the value in someone getting a 5850 and overclocking to 5870 speeds.

But.... I also hear many people complaining about crashing and blue screens etc... with overclocked 5850...

Hang on when you say overclock it to 5870 speeds do you mean just 850 on the core and 4800MHz on the ram?

Is that do able by a noob like my self, easily?

Additioally I would prefer to get a ATI card, as it sucks less juice, runs cooler and I have a crossfire mobo.

Should I just say screw it and get the cheapest 5870 I can find?

Or can I get close to 5870 with a 5850, and overclock my self?
