My son has just completed his first year on a BTEC Nationa Diploma For IT Practitioners, now he put absolutely no effort in and still had units outstanding 3days before the cut off date. I have no doubt in my mind that he hasnt passed the all the units for the first year.

When i asked him if he passed he said that he would find out when he enroles for the second year, which i believe to be utter rubbish and in fact he has failed and is hoping he can blag his way through to the second year. Why would find out on a two year course when you go to enrole for the second year if you have passed the first year..........you find out pass or fail well in advance of enroling for the 2nd year, right ?

So, the question is, if you fail the first year on a Btec National Diploma are you allowed to carry on to the 2nd year ? Is it up to the tutors to decide if you can proceed (if you failed) or is it as clear cut as FAIL AND YOUR OUT ?

The cut off date for the course work was 25th june and the course is assessment based so would i be right in saying he would know by now if he passed or failed ?

I believe the tutor can decide if the student can have extra time to finnish previous work before or while on the second year but it was a while ago since I did btech :)

Speak to the college but I think they can usually let people stay on and re-do bits, depending on just how much they have done of course.

I imagine a lot lies in the hands of the tutor - they should be able to allow flexibility with the rules in extenuating circumstances.

However, if your crotch-fruit is simply very lazy then I doubt he'll get far with "blagging". ;)

Depends on tutor, if its not the higher, then by regulations he doesnt have to complete all the modules in the year and can complete the missing modules the next year, but its up to his tutors and form tutor if they want to allow this, couple of lads did this in my electrical engineering might result in a pass being the highest result he can get though

bizzarely i cant even remember exactly how my BTEC nat dip worked (wasnt in IT mind)

im half thinking that unless its too many units failed they will give him the old units back to re do over summer

but then half thinking that this would have been done by now. sort of a ''bring the completed work back next year and your ok'' . it all depends on what the tutors think/do

best thing to do is obviously contact the college and ask

Thanks for that but i assume thats dependant on if the tutor thinks the student is worth the effort, unfortunately i think the tutors and myself put more effort in to my son than he did the course.

It's pretty much entirely at the tutor's discretion. When I did my BTEC National Diploma (in music), there were loads of people that put zero effort into the course, and were handing in first year coursework come the end of year two. :o

Your son would do well to have a tutor that's obsessed with making themselves look good.

I've done the exact same course at College Green, City of Bristol.

I can say that you can go through to the second year, provided you've done X amount of units. You MUST do the core units, which is Maths and one other if I recall correctly. He's got to pull himself together, as it gets harder to get decents marks as they all tally together to get Distinctions, Merits, or even Passes.

My son is quite happy to sit in his room and play on his xbox 5 days week and work 8hrs at the weekend. Hes 19yrs old ! Oh and maths was one of the units/assignments he had outstanding in the last week. Just to put it into perspective, he was still doing assignment 1 in the last week

Well, kick him in the ass then mate.. Get his priorities straight.. The first year might not count to him yet, but when it comes to getting stuff wrapped up in the second year, he'll look back and go 'crap', wish I did.

We game him an incentive when he was in sixth form (which he dropped out of) by buying him a moped if he knuckled down, we offered to buy him a car if he stuck in and knuckled down on his BTEC. I even told him that if he failed the course (back in december) due to a complete lack of effort on his behalf then i would kick him out - i know that he is my son and i should stand by him and support him but he has to stand on his own two feet and grow up, at the moment he just has no appreciation for the consequences of his actions. He has a 1yr old son and he cant even see that what he does now at college is not only his future but its also his sons future.

This may be completely irrelevant information but:

With A-Levels, you normally recieve the results mid to late August.

If it's your first year you are allowed to resit units / modules during the second year in either the january exam period or the june period. You have to pay for them, but not much, around £30 if I remember correctly.

I'm presuming that the situation won't be too different with BTEC.

With my BTEC ITP you knew what you did pretty much straight away.

You hand in your work; you get it back with 1 week to improve then hand back. Then in a couple of weeks (depending how lazy your tutors are) you'd get a mark back.

And at the end of the year you knew how well/bad you'd done.

But of course it may differ from institution to institution

And to be honest, failing that is a very hard thing to do.

Yay just got my £100 bonus. :D :D :D

I teach on the BTEC and our results went through to the Board a fortnight ago. So yes, a pass or fail would be known by now.

We gave students deadlines to complete units, and had the criteria that progression to year 2 was only possible if year 1 was complete.

However, I do believe it is discretionary so it might be worth speaking to the tutor. Although the ones that peed about in their first year and did not acheive will not be given year two progression on my courses!

I don't think OCR have released the results yet. Anything externally marked will be released all at once. BTECs are internally marked so lecturers will know results.
