which kfa? i had the kfa2 OC LTD edition.. it sounded like a wind tunnel. not too different from the 6800ultra i been using as backup!
and thats dropping the fan to 20% in msi afterburner...
on load its pretty horrific and without afterburner it was even worse! it was that bad i emailed kfa and in the end returned the card for a refund.. so now im using a borked 6800u instead of a proper gfx card...

okay some more bad news, gigabyte aint gonna be available for 3-4 weeks...

MSI Cyclone is louder than the Palit
one thing I read on msi website is that they use - SSC (Solid State Chock) has No Buzz noise and higher current for better overclocking ability.
I really pray that is the death of the sqeal. Have gone for the cyclone, it seems this gen of cards has just simply raised the ceiling for noise levels

The fan is bigger, the heatsink is bigger, I don't see how it could be louder.
Also it was more the 'whine' of the Palit that is the problem, I don't mind the whoosh of air, its the whine of fan that is a total no no.
Furthermore the MSI card runs 10C cooler than the Palit, so to me that says I can knock the fan down a good 10% or so and still have cracking temps.

I wish the reviewers of these cards would put an mp3 or video of the fan noise up along with the reviews. Then we could easily decide if the type of fan noise is unacceptable or not. My 8800GTS makes no whining noise at all - just a whooshing noise that's not in any way annoying.
The problem with the Palit's whine is that it changes in pitch as it speeds up which makes more irritating.
Still, my refund has been approved, so all I need now is for the MSI or Gigabyte cards to become available now.

My KFA2 is the 768 meg version and is the overclocked edition. There is no squeal on Crysis and I've not clocked it any. I have a Phenom BE550 and have clocked that to 3.6 gig and at stock with the KFA can play everything maxed out at 1920x1080 so don't see the point in playing with the 460's settings.
It does not get any louder than it is now, the fan says 20% and I played Crysis for a good 2 hours last night.
One more thing, mine has the serviceable fan. There are clips you can undo to remove the fan to enable you to spray in an air duster or the like to clean the heat sink.

Interesting above, well the fan profile for the gainward gs, the fan doesn't go lower than 40% - doesn't go any lower in expertool. Maybe you can do it in msi afterburner though.

they advised the same thing. most 1GB wont be landing for 3 weeks... hence why all we are seeing is Palit and Gainward... and only slivers of things from partners like xfx, asus msi, gig etc...
paper launch of 1GB with a proper launch of the 768mb cards...
the odd handful might come through here or there but proper quantity and availability across the board is a way away.
