To NAS or not to NAS?

Hi guys,

I was looking at the possibility of getting a NAS for my setup at home.

At the moment I have 1 main PC which streams to the rest of my house. I got a PS3 and a XBOX360 to stream media to. I also use my PC to watch/listen to media as well./

I use a wired connection between my router and my consoles via a wireless router. Then there is a wireless connection between my main PC and router. It all works well so far.

I've had a look at the possibility of a getting a Netgear NAS.
The one I like the look of is the NETGEAR RND2120 NAS because they currently have a free 2TB deal. So I would have 4TB in total which is enough space for me.

I was thinking of reasons why I want a NAS here are some.

1. Free up drive space in my PC. (both physical and actual drive slots)
2. Less noisy PC.
3. Possibility of sharing files via FTP and accessing at work.

Can you think of anymore reasons to want a NAS?

Also I got some questions.

If I had 1 GIG connection between my NAS and main PC
would the access speeds to files from the NAS To my PC be as quick as I access my sata drives from my main PC at the moment?

what would you do for backups?

any thoughts welcome thanks

Does the PS3 have the ability to access a NAS via FTP?

I have a Icybox 4220 myself and i can't get the PS3 to even see it.

Just something to keep in mind.

For the back-up question i have used synctoy and robocopy from a bat file, isn't a lot between them for my uses. Robocopy does have a lot of extra features you can write into the bat file though

good question not sure but on the website it says consoles ARE compatible.

would come down to what OS is on these things?
if I can get ps3 media server installed and working it will work

Nas

I did and its great , I got a qnap 409 + 4 x 1.5TB drives in RAID 5 (uses twonky)
I access my media via either my htpc in living room or PS3
OR
Access my media from my main PC in the computer room.

I also use sabnzbd on my qnap to auto download my tv /movies etc when I sleep at night
It uses RSS feeds from sites link tvnzb.com or other rss nzb feeds

Its uses a linux based OS
There are a load a downloadable utils etc that you can get free from qnap

Check the qnap site for more info

Yeah , works great

Loudness , hmm as loud as your drives (I cant hear mine)

oh not no noisy lousy fan?

do u have gigg speeds? do you think if I played music in media player it would load instantly? like i got it on the same hdd as my os?

It has Gigabit lan on it
Read: 25MB/s
Write: 11MB/s
Tests done using win7 (so might be faster under Xp)

Yes it will load stuff instantly ( unless the drives are spun down to power saving)
takes 20-30 secs to spool drives up again (idle time is configurable or you can swithc it off f u like)

thanks sounds good
any ideas of what is a good NAS would that netgear one be okay for mysetup?

That 2TB deal looks good imo I'll have 4TB of space that should be enough.

seems quite slow... like wireless b or something... and this is over ethernet?

those speeds are pretty slow then

I get on my sata drive at present

read 40mb/s

write 34mb/s

please tell me your connection is NOT 1 GIG!?

I just got a NETGEAR Stora (1TB version) for less than £100 and its great!
Its a pretty basic NAS but it means I am now able to now share all my music photos and videos to several computers and my PS3.
Its a funky little black box, has a spare slot to add anotehr drive for mirroring and its so quiet you dont even know its on.
It even has a power saver/sleep timer thing so it turns itself off at night and back on in the morning - you can set the times as you like, brill! :)
BTW it has gigabit LAN and i have been able to copy files to it at over 25mb/s

Emm, the Qnap is one of the faster Nas you can get , most are LOT slower
And Iam using RAID5 on it which adds overhead to transfers especially when writing. (I prefer data protection to speed)
As long as its fast enough to allow me to stream 1080P blu-ray rips to my PC Iam happy :)

I am also looking for a either a NAS or simply a HDD to plug into my router that I can stream divx/avis to my PS3.

May I ask where you two have seen this free 1Tb deal from as that is enough for me for now and around £100 I would definitely buy one.

At the moment I am considering just a HDD but the idea of torrents over night sound to good. Plus it will be turn on all the so a NAS might be better.
