Spec me a tripod please!

Most people eventually end up with a ball head, unless you want the finer adjustment of a pan and tilt head then it makes more sense, faster to adjust and more compact.

Look what arrived today

The bag. Suprisingly, rather nice quality, has a nice thick, padded strap, with a rubberised underside so it doesn't slip off your shoulder.

Each of the three leg sections fully extended. It's about the same height as me, and i'm about 5' 8". It easily reaches my eye level

Just waiting for the head to be delivered now

Excellent. Don't forget you can raise the centre pole as well, this can be essential if using the camera in portrait orientation. Which head did you go for? I've got both the 3way pan and the ball head, you won't be disappointed with either :)

I ended up going for a Manfrotto 3 pan/tilt. I had more funds than I expected after my birthday, so I thought, why not. The Manfrotto looks more robust than the Redsnapper head. From the pictures I'd seen, the Redsnapper seemed less...chunky

The ball head is built very, very well. Not sure about the other one - but then again can't see myself going back to them after the ball head :p

I went to the local photo shop being with J (don't know if its classed as a competitor or not?) and had a play, and I just didn't like the ball head, just seemed to clumsy for my mitts, i prefered the pan/tilt, even if it is a bit slower to use

Does that work?

I borrowed a redsnapper (unknown model) the other week and it had a hole in the legs and a twin-threaded protruding stud on the head.

My Manfrotto heads have a threaded hole in the head, into which accepts the protruding thread from my Manfrotto and Gitzo legs.

Close up

Hi.
This is well late but I just wanted to add my comment to an interesting thread. I was just about to buy manfrotto but suddenly discovered the Redsnapper range. I got my Redsnapper RS-324 4 Section alloy Tripod & RSH-12 Ball Head yesterday less than 24hrs after ordering it from Joe himself at Redsnapper. I even got the 10% discount for mentioning that I'm a (very new) member of Talk Photography where Joe is a member and trader.
I honestly don't think I will ever have to buy another tripod again. The head is great quality and easy to use despite me never having used a ball head before. However I would like to see spirit levels fitted to the head to ensure my camera is level. A bubble level is fitted on the tripod. I'm nearly 6' 01" tall but with the tripod fully extended and the column set lowest I have to stand on my tiptoes to see through the viewfinder of my Olympus E620 with battery grip attached. With the centre column extended it's way over my head. It also comes with a short centre pole if you want to sling your camera underneath for macro. Also include is a thread insert and tool which I assume is for fitting another head which has a smaller thread. The tripod has its own carrying strap and a great quality robust padded carry case and strap.
The whole thing just oozes quality which belies its price and I'm so pleased I bought it.
