OcUK's plans for the future and new blood...

Absolutely right jaybee :)

I'm like plenty of others here, you cannot be expected to remember every single rule, especially when a member of multiple forums. Anyone that says otherwise is just baiting for the sake of it. I've been suspended about 3 times i think, i felt aggrieved each time tbh, but i don't hold it against anyone in particular. Modding is hard and i appreciate the work the guys do.
BUT the underlying theme from most, and happily its been acknowledged by the powers that be, is the inconsistency in modding.
Warnings would be much better than instant bannings, especially in MM.

Here's hoping it does improve and good luck and thanks to the guys that take on the roles.

I'll add my 2p here. All of the rules are regularly reviewed by the MM Dons and they all have an important function in making the MM the safe place to trade that it is. I don't apologise for them being perhaps a bit harsh or strict, they are there to protect our members and it works the vast majority of the time. I also feel that people reading them and following them isn't an unfair request. I know you may be a member of many forums, but if you want to trade here I don't think it's unreasonable for you to have a quick re-read of the rules.

As some of you may know, we've recently implemented infractions, so that all warnings result in a PM telling you what rule you've broken. We want to help people by explaining why we do what we do, but if you don't read and follow the rules this will result in a suspension.

We've also made a list of minor and major rule breaks. Minor rule breaks such as split requests will result in an infraction, warning you of what you did and how it's against the rules. It's only after you don't heed this warning will it result in a suspension. These two minor rule breaks add up to one major strike. Major rule breaks such as thread trashing or bidding disrupt the sale and only hinders a transaction for everyone. These will remain an instant suspension, but we will still give an infraction explaining the suspension for you to read when the suspension is over. 3 strikes and MM access is removed.

Remember that MM access is a privilege for our trusted and valued members, and that we do need to keep it a safe place for everyone.

Thus defeating the object of the forums?
In my case it was simply that i advised the seller about his product that he wasn't aware of.
He thanked me in a personal email because i got suspended for it and couldn't read the boards. I got no reason as to why i was suspended. I sent an email to the admin, got no reply. So, actually, i'm assuming that's why i got suspended. I don't post offensive crap in GD or anywhere else, so it cold only really have been in MM.

And, please, every mod that is allowed to use discretion will do so depending on their moods at the time. Its human nature. I'm not admonishing them for it (we all do it), but it could do with having some flexibility to it....like warnings.

The reason should have been obvious if you had read the rules.

However, we are looking at the potential idea of allowing people to PM moderators, therefore making it easier to query these issues. We don't want to go around banning people out of the MM. It's more work for us and doesn't help the community. The more people read and understand the rules, the better this is for everyone, hence why we are trying to make the reasoning for our actions as apparent as possible.

BUT the underlying theme from most, and happily its been acknowledged by the powers that be, is the inconsistency in modding.

Also bear in mind that the MM Dons are regularly discussing Mod decisions/policies and if anything we have the most consistent approach to MM modding that I know of.

To right, i got banned instantly for a minor rule infringement.

That was 4 years ago and the system has changed since then, it looks like you only had one chance back then.
If you'd like to have your access re-instated you could email an MM Don who will look at it for you :)

A clean slate and looking to improve further. Good stuff.

Perhaps another suggestions thread? Although I'm sure you already have lots of ideas!

I've always liked the idea of having some way to link 'spec me' hardware threads and their accompanying screenshot of the store to something more 'tangible'. i.e. when a basket is 'created' (and fiiled) with a specification for someone it somehow generates an ID - put that ID in the bastket and the spec pops up, ready to buy/tweak.

Hope that makes sense. Spec me threads are very popular on this forum, and probably (directly or indirectly) create a lot of sales for OcUK. Seems to make sense to link it directly to the store.

I'd appreciate a response - I'm actually curious whether this is even possible!

I can understand why there is a lot of frustration with the moderation here and having been a moderator for a while, I can understand it from both sides of the fence.

There are a few areas with a great deal of room for improvement, lack of guidance from the top being a massive part of it. During my time as a moderator, one of my main gripes was the lack of guidance from the top, down through all ranks from Admin to Underboss. This left the decisions made by moderators down to discretion in most cases. Due to the many different types of people on the moderating team, discretion led to a lack of consistency. This lack of consistency reflected and continues to reflect poorly on the moderating team and the forums as a whole. There are various sets of guidelines laid out for moderators to follow but they are poorly written and are butchered and modified at times by someone who feels they need an update. The modifications are not oftenj thoroughly discussed and the changes aren't filtered down to the other ranks and indeed the members, hence why we have a lot of members getting bans and suspensions not having known they've broken the rules.

There needs to be a comprehensive set of guidelines written up by those in charge of running the forums. There also needs to be a comprehensive guide to rules which is transparent and leaves the members in no doubt as to what is permitted or not. There are far too many "unwritten rules" on OcUK, which doesn't look very professional. No wonder people think the moderation here is ham-fisted.

There also needs to be more moderators. When I was on the team I found that to take care of all my areas of responsibility, I'd be spending up to 3 hours a day dealing with it. It got to the point where I just didn't bother and whether they admit it or not, there are moderators on the team who sit on their arse and do nothing apart from edit the occasional post with size 72 yellow font once in a blue moon. These moderators need to be weeded out and some fresh blood brought in. There are many members who would be suited to the moderating task and who would be more than willing to carry it out.

Most of the moderating team here are dedicated to making OcUK a better place to post but they are being held back by poor procedures and poor delegation. I don't know if they have raised it yet but a lot of the team were frustrated with how things were run when I was doing it.

And the above point brings me to my final point. There is a legacy of fear of speaking out left behind from days gone by. The result was a team of "yes men" moderating OcUK. This legacy needs to be quashed and it can only be done by the people at the top.

I hope my feedback is welcome.

+1

SA forums has a tucked away new thread button. Dumb people often get confused and thus the likelihood of dumb threads is minimised considerably.

OcUK needs a ninja new thread button too if it wants to up the ante in the quality stakes.
