Japanese Boss?

I was wondering if anyone here has ever had a Japanese (ideally Japan born) boss/manager. If so, what was it like?

I'm choosing between jobs and one particular boss is Japanese and was very nice, he seemed shy and wouldn't keep eye contact. It was a little difficult to communicate with him too.

I had frustrations with not getting feedback from my previous managers/boss. A friend of mine said I personally would find having a Japanese boss very strange. Apparently if I'm expecting a pat on the back or congratulations for a good job, the Japanese equivalent is a slight nod of the head.

Can we please refrain from racial comments or accusations. I'm clearly aware that all people are different regardless of race or creed, and I'm pretty sure everyone else in this forum is too. I'm merely looking for opinions/feelings from people who have worked under Japanese management.

PS, I read your fine print and totally disreagarded it.

It's 2am in Fri night in GD. He should know better than to make a thread and expect it to be taken 100% seriously.

2.08am... Just about the time people are getting back home from nightclubs, drunkenly firing up their PC's and heading to GD..... :p

Indeed, what a noob!

*edit*

Also, if you do end up having a Japanese boss, impress him with your knowledge of Rip Syime

Had to do a job for a Japanese commercials director. Lordy that was hard work. Especially when he drank me under the table with some killer sake and then expected me to be up at 6am the next day and on the ball on set.

Man, all my years of abusing my liver, I have never tasted Sake. I am ashamed and dissapoint.

The Japanese go about things in a very different manner. There are many different customs and methods of conducting business which, if you aren't aware of, can make things more difficult for your relationship. For example, there is a very distinct protocol involved in the boss/employee relationship. Saving face is extremely important. It's a very complex matter if you work in a Japanese staffed organisation but if your boss is a lone Jap, there shouldn't be any considerable issue.

Actually I never said I did... I work nights.

And people in the UK are not the only ones no, but they do make up at least 90%+ of GD posters.

Thanks a lot Scuzi!

It actually is a heavily Japanese staffed organisation and I will be working with teams in Japan too. Maybe even travel there.

In all fairness I've been able to travel a lot so I'm very open to things like this, in fact I quite enjoy it. I like the advice you gave Scuzi, it would be a good idea for me to look up the boss-employee relationship etiquette.

If you have any tips or websites that you can recommend I'd really appreciate it. It sounds like you know a little about this.

I worked for a Japanese company along side some Japanese people and indirectly for the Japanese bosses. Like anywhere it comes down to the individual, the ones I have met were really nice polite people, of course there will be some out there that might be horrible.

The eye contact thing is weird, a person in a lower position isn't meant to look a higher up person in the eyes, but as he would be your boss he should lol. I'm not sure if this is old fashioned now.

Can I have this job? I'd love to go to Japan. :p

i worked for a japanese organisation, and he will be fine.

Simply becasue you are not japanese you are expected to get thing wrong and not understnad japanese culture,

and if you do mess up its ok, its becuase you are not japanese and you don't understand, so you will get a pat on the head :)

I remember i asked Rie one how to prounounce his the name of the boss of his boss.

he replied, dont worry, he will expect you to get it wrong, and will be disappointed if you get it right. :)
