LoL when heavily tessellated titles appear the 460 and 5850 will be doing 10 and 12 frames respectively in them, them cards will be well out dated by then.
I doubt game will be using extreme tessellations anytime soon. I'm just suggesting the chances are GTX460 1GB will probably perform better in higher than normal or heavy (not extreme) tessellation game titles than the 5850.

If that happens, it simple mean that the 5850 would be due for an upgrade sooner than a GTX460 1GB...unless driver update can somehow miracalously boost tessellations performance for the 5850. GTX460 1GB tessellations capability is a bit higher than 5870...and once overclocked the widen the gap even more.

Tessellation is pie in the sky, non of this generation of DX11 cards are fast enough to make much use.

Buying a card now based on it tessellation performance is unwise. That go's for PhysX, eyefinity and the other nonsense we keep getting rammed down our throats.

I said it again and again...it's best to wait for 2nd gen dx11 cards. And no, not only buying basing solely on better tessellation performance, but also the fact that it is not hugely slower than a 5850, being cheaper than it (good luck finding shop with 5850 with voltage tweak such as Asus in stock for under £230) and offering more features, only at the sacrifice of being slightly slower. If the 5850 were also around the same price range, then it a different story.

Bit harsh no?

I'm hardly the world's biggest advocate of any of those technologies, but some find them useful. For example, Rroff will be along soon to teach you about CUDA. :p

Just been reading some reviews and the 768 MB version when clocked loses very little at 1080p to the 1 GB version.

This looks good for under £150 I guess I would be mad though to consider the gimped version eh?

Yeah I forgot about the 1gb vs 768mb issue ... It's not just memory that's the difference, the bandwidth is higher on the 1gig version.

40 seconds into this ...

This left me thinking 1gig version only but at £40>the base model it leaves you thinking somewhat.

It depends of what you are prepared to pay. The GTX460 768MB is a cracking card at it's price, but you have to bare in mind not only it has less memory, but it is also 24 ROPS instead of 32 ROPs of the 1GB version.

Also a reminder that the price difference...a MSI/Asus GTX460 1GB card with voltage tweak should be around £180, whereas a two models of the Asus 5850 with voltage tweak are at £230+/£250+.

People argue standard 5850 will pull ahead when overclocked, but I doubt a 5850 overclocked on stock voltage would be much faster than a GTX460 1GB with voltage tweak overclocked to 900MHz+.

Personally I would get a 460, in particular the MSI overclocked model. I do have a preference for NV cards though there is no denying the 5850 when overclocked past stock 5870 speeds will crush the 460. I think everyone is still in shock that NV, for the first time since the 8800GT, have released a damn fine mid-range card to at last mix things up a bit, and prices are tumbling on both sides. Ain't competition great. :D

Any reference 5850 can be overclock with overvolting?

Plus there are at least a few shops that sell Asus 5850 under £215-220 delivered. And yes, they have them in stock.

MSI Afterburner works well with upping the voltage on reference models so your argument is pointless. There are 5850s for under £195 that can be overclocked well above GTX460 1GB, nobody cares if you accept it or not.

Em...ain't the almost all the current 5850 in shops now are non-reference? Thought the reference model were long gone in the first 6 months...
Also, are those shops you referring to reputable?

There is a lot of talk about different brands of 460 with regards to temperature and noise. Looks like the 1GB Gigabyte cards are the popular ones.

What about the 5850 ? Is there a certain model that stands out (without the high price tag) ?

Thanks,
Steve.

I faced this dilemma the other week when I ordered my new PC. I went for a 5850 and my friend went for a 460. I'm happy I made the right choice.
