My Golf - Update thread

Cool nice project with the R1 carbs, nearly fitted a set of them to a C20XE (redtop) vauxhall engine a few years ago but went turbo route instead.

Interesting about the mk4 head mods, good stuff though should be great fun :D

Bit of an update, things have pretty much ground to a halt as I've had an expensive few weeks, but pretty much all the little bits and pieces needed have been bought now, basically just the camshaft to buy now. In the mean time I thought I'd spruce up the cam-cover a bit. I was going to go for a polished 'mirror' finish, but gave up because:

A - It was too much like hard work and couldn't be arsed any more ;)
B - It's been done to death.

So I decided to stick with the black/silver theme of the car and paint the cam cover accordingly:

Satin black with silver 'accents'. Finish could be better, but I'm pretty happy with the result. I still need to flat and polish the raised rectangular silver part, I've left it as bare alu and will try to get a nice shiny finish on it.

Finally got the last bits and pieces, so I'll hopefully make a start swapping the engine next week:

In that pic:

- Newman 272 Camshaft (and Torco MPZ cam lube)
- Reconditioned R1 Fuel pump
- Denso plugs
- RD Engineering Catch Can
- Distributor adapter ring

These updates should start getting more interesting soon ;)

I didn't realise you use the r1 pump, suprised it flows enough?

Yep, it's the norm when using R1 carbs. It's provides more than enough flow, but the main reason for using it is you don't have to mess about with a pressure regulator, the R1 pump is 'self regulating' when used with the R1 carbs and always delivers the correct amount of fuel.

Engine is ready to be fitted now, next step is to remove old engine.....

'They'? You mean 'it', SOHC 8v powahh ;)

It's a Newman 272 camshaft. Will give a fairly lumpy idle, but I've got no problem with that :D

It is huge fun, puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. If you do want one I wouldn't wait too long if I were you, prices seem to be climbing very quickly, you are looking at £1.5k+ for good ones now.

Tis true! Just got a valver in "fair" :S condition for a grand but it needs bits doing and the clutch has just turned to cheese.

It does indeed put a smile on my face when it works though :D

Oh and nice build Drexel :D looking ofrward to seeing the progress. Must start a thread for mine once i get the ball rolling. Aiming to get back to OEM :D
