So my camera was on a chair today with the 50mm on it and someone leaned on the chair which caused the camera to roll off and hit the floor.

Picked it up, seemed fine, took a picture and and I here a *thunk* - the front of the lens had popped out when trying to focus...so I carefully pushed it back in, have taken a few shots so seemed ok.

I'm now very conscious of the lens and don't really trust it...also have 4 weddings coming up this year where no doubt it'll get used a lot.

The guy who knocked it couldn't apologise enough, he said straight away if it needs replacing just to let him know and he'll sort it out for me.

I'm going to do some sharpness tests on it tonight, but I'm very wary of it :( - Shall I not take the risk and just get it replaced? or if it seems ok just carry on as normal? what would you do?

Guy was very genuine and I don't hold anything against him, these things happen :)

But your could ask for money in the value of a 1.8 and fund the rest for an upgrade yourself,

I'd love the 1.4 but I'm spending my money on other things right now :) - If when I've got the remaining I could always sell the 1.8 and do that, then.

I'd not do it either... :p

I like my nifty!.. I've had a play with the 1.4... but I've only got a 400D, so not worth it just yet! (not till I can afford a MkII like some people!! :( )

the 1.4 is lovely. I've used it when assisting...it frames faces amazingly. Truely lush bit of kit....but I've got my shiny 85mm on the way to keep me amused :)

If you like the nifty on your 400D (crop sensor) then surely you should be looking at the 85 f1.8 or 1.2L if you get a full frame DSLR

Nope, looking for the 85mm to give me that extra reach on FF or a crop sensor, plus its an unbelievably sharp lens. And I'm on a 40D btw :)

Just for the sake of being nosey, which 85mm? The expensive one or the horrendously expensive one? :p

lol, the 1.8 :)

I don't have the money for the 1.2L, as amazing as it is, the 1.8 has a faster AF and is just as sharp...also I don't need 1.2 :)

I'm just doing a lot of reading up and forward planning you see. In January my debts will be paid off, and I'm trying to spend my money I don't yet have :D

135, 85, 35. Ooo what to save for? I have no actual style of photography I want to practice, as I generally take photos with what I have and learn as I go along. Or not as the case may be :D

I suppose the 85 makes more sense as I have a 50mm & a Sigma 105 macro. Unless I win the lottery and buy them all, including that 800mm £10k monster :D

Errrm lets not slate the 85 F1.2. Its slow to af but so is a Howitzer tank and I'd like to see your T90 fire at that! :P

In regards to the question. If your history serves you well you will have seen me **** off the 50 F1.8 for EXACTLY this reason. Mine has fell outside of its case because its an awful constructed lens. I know its cheap but 90 quid is 90 quid.

The reason this has happened is that the clasp is likely to of come loose or broke or the paper thin rings around the case are no longer locked into place.
Its not reliable and I threw mine in the bin after it had happened because I couldn't prevent it from falling out again. It took a week or so but it kept doing it.

Yup I love mine. The 50mm was always on my camera, now the 85mm is. Wanting a 30/35mm prime next :p

I've got a Sigma 17-50 2.8 atm, only lens I have so going to save up for the 85mm, unless I sell the Sigma but then I'll only have the 85mm, might limit me a bit :\
